I think my dog is sick... [modified]

Yesterday my dog started acting a little sick, like being lethargic and not wanting to eat. My wife asked if she could take him to the vet, "sure babe, take him in". So far we're over 1k for the day. Vet wants to do more x-rays to "make sure" nothing else is wrong, but admittedly he could quite possible just be sick with a fever. What can ya say? Gotta keep the dog healthy and most owners would pay whatever to keep their companions around, but on the flip side it seems like this vet is having a field day with all tests and charges. I'm done griping and I love my dog, but I might not love the vet as much.

Great, we are picking up our puppy next Thursday, don't remind me of the costs, I'm poor enough! Actually I'm really looking foward to it, it's been awhile since I had a dog. Hope yours gets better.
Thanks Jeron. I know it sounds silly, but there is pet health insurance. Most can be had for under 20.00 a month. With the trips I've had with my rottie, it would have paid itself off already. Good luck w/ your pup.

I wonder if it might be a twisted stomach... That causes the symptoms you're seeing. It's also usually a fatal problem. The vet may be able to fix it once, but not usually a second time...

I wonder if it might be a twisted stomach... That causes the symptoms you're seeing. It's also usually a fatal problem. The vet may be able to fix it once, but not usually a second time...

I haven't heard of that condition before and my dog is a rottie. I'm hoping he just got sick and the antibotics will get him going again else I'll be crying :((

Had a saint with a flipped stomach. We did not make it to the vet in time. I sympathize with you as I have had to make the decision a few times over the years. Not having a family it was a little easier but still hard. Best of luck with the dog. djj

Hope your dog feels better. We lost a dog years ago when I was in high school and really sucked, so best of luck and all that.

you get a 5 from me... I'm an insensitive prick but when it comes to pets, any money is too much. I was raised in the country and was raised poor. Our pets died frequently. Killed by wild animals (when I was about 7 I watched one of my kittens get attacked by a bull snake), get hit by farm equipment/cars, etc. It was something you learned to live with. I watched my dog get put down after being hit by a car (bullet, not by a vet). When an animal got sick, if what was on the shelf at walmart wouldn't cure it, the animal died. We didn't have the money to take a pet to a vet. You (whomever is reading this, not necessarily Joe) might think it cruel to allow an animal to live in such an environment or that as a less privledged family, who couldn't afford a vet, we shouldn't have been able to have animals as pets, but my opinnion is that I am a better person for having witnessed it. Sure it sucks but learning to dealing with loss is a valuable lesson in life that too many people never learn. These "life lessons" are what make me who I am today and I highly doubt anyone will ever convince me that I am worse off than someone who hasn't experienced the things I have. Oh, and for the record, I'm only 30yo so this isn't exactly a case of "back when I was a kid in 05".

I've seen a couple of instances of that, and you are (of course) absolutely correct about the prospects of fatality. One Vet told me the survival rate for it was only about 10%, so I do hope that Jon-boy's pooch ain't got it.
