It's a repost but I didn't think this was that big of a deal. I've ridden in the 'jump seat' more than once when flying using my father-in-law's perks with a major US carrier. I think recent regulation has now forbidden it since 9/11. I could see a paying passenger not liking this as it an uncomfortable way to travel

They have plenty of overcapacity you know, 3 extra passengers really aren't going to cause weight problems. edit: that said, they really shouldn't have. I'm guessing you are not an engineer and haven't hung out with very many. With something like an airplane weighing on the order of 80,000lbs (at a minimum) you would be out of your mind to have tolerances so tight that (assuming 150lbs per person) 450lbs would cause a loss of control.

I used to fly two or three times a week on short and medium trips; I've never seen that but I've heard it from others once or twice.

for small planes, the chance of being over-weight is definitely a concern. but a commercial jet liner is obviously not a small plane.

Your guess is wrong, I'm an engineer and two of my uncles are aircraft engineers :-\ Dont go by the weights, 80,000 lbs aircraft can be out of control with a 1 lb bird hit. ;P Airline standards are there for a reason. There is something called MTOW (Maximum Allowable Take Off Weight) and also the evacuation procedures are affected by additional passengers. I'm not saying 3 additional PAX would surely be dangerous, but there is a possibility if there is a breach of standards.

And if 200 passengers weigh 5% more than the standard calculation then you're in effect carrying 10 more passengers. Chris is still right, you cannot work with margins that small on a vessel that large. A 1lb bird striking a commercial jet is going to have to hit something critical. Really critical. And it won't be the additional weight of a splattered bird that'll have the effect. It'll be the sudden application of an opposing force bending something important.

This is Air India we are talking about. It could have been worse they could have been told that there was no more room for them on the flight which would have resulted in them standing on a bus for a few days to make the trip.
