So, I joined Twitter, because I needed to, to enter into a contest. Now I get people following me every day, and they are all basically advertisements. What a joke. Twitter seems dumb to me anyhow, people seem to use it to follow celebrities, who then post what they eat and when it leaves their bodies.

You only see what you follow. If all the tweets you get are about this, then you need to find more interesting people to follow. It's all down to the user. Also I believe there's a private setting somewhere to prevent the ad-crap.

You know what would be cool? Some software that could link up to a twitter account and then auto-twat for you. You could let it run all the time and it would just make up crazy stuff. Something like that WTF article way back about the neural net program that was used to generate a poetry ("The pig go. Go is to the fountain. The pig put foot", etc). Better yet if the program could create twitter accounts, and just let it rip. See who ends up following it. Laugh. Profit!!

I was just speculating about an app to create accounts and tweet certain sets of keywords, and measure the response as a gain in followers. I quite often have fun doing that on my own account, but can't really be sure the sudden deluge of followers after using 'viagra' is all from just that one tweet.

There's some spam on Twitter. If you follow good people, it has some value. For me, it's a great way to stay up-to-date on tech and programming from people close to the technologies. See my post in the Lounge the other day: Who to follow on Twitter[^]. Oh, and you need a good Twitter desktop client to filter through all the junk. TweetDeck[^] is one popular one. I use a WPF client called Witty[^].

"It is a poor craftsman who blames his tools." I'm sure you get spam in your email account as well, but you still use it because a) you've developed a system for dealing with it and b) the positives outweigh the negatives. I find it amusing that so many of the forum trolls here at CP pontificate about the worthlessness of Twitter when there is really important, poignant stuff here on CP like: Retro Lunch[^] Hello[^] Complete these well known song titles[^] I'm not casting aspersions on anyone here (except maybe those who are casting aspersions on Twitter users). My point is that the Twitter stream may have more noise but if you know how to use it, you can easily filter that out and it is no more inane than some of the stuff that's tolerated here. By they way, you can follow me on Twitter: @JonDiPietro[^]

So, I joined Twitter, because I needed to, to enter into a contest. Now I get people following me every day, and they are all basically advertisements. What a joke. Twitter seems dumb to me anyhow, people seem to use it to follow celebrities, who then post what they eat and when it leaves their bodies.

This is an error. The engine can arrange and combine numerical quantities as if they were letters or any other general symbols; and it fact it might bring out its results in algebraical notation, were provisions made accordingly." Yeah, I encountered that as well. I think the scam is that if you follow enough people, a certain percentage of them will feel obligated to follow you back, whether they're really interested in you or not. Don't really see the point in that other than the fact that it inflates your numbers and makes you look (or feel) important. I deal with it by looking at their numbers when they follow me. If they're following 7000 people and are followed by 7000 people, it pretty much tells the story.
