I remember Intel demonstrating something like that. It's good to know that the idea might be taking off - I'd love to have something like that operating in a house of my own. The only thing that concerns me is security; what's to stop a person hijacking their neighbours' electricity supply and piping it to their house?

People with vision? Practicality aside, it would be awesome to at least have localized broadcast power so you can really do away with wires. Sure it'll give you cancer but it's convenient and elegant.

Tesla was definitely ahead of his time. A bit of a crackpot at times but undeniably a genius and visionary. Kind amusing how popular he seems to be among geeks.

And the story is always the same, "It works just like two coils in a transformer." But they never give the details about how they've "made it practical", because "ooooh, that's our trade secret" Yeah, right...

"Many : not conversant with mathematical studies, imagine that because it [the Analytical Engine] is to give results in numerical notation, its processes must consequently be arithmetical, numerical, rather than algebraical and analytical. This is an error. The engine can arrange and combine numerical quantities as if they were letters or any other general symbols; and it fact it might bring out its results in algebraical notation, were provisions made accordingly."
