Um2 last time I checked male was a gender, not a race ;P ;P But admitted, sometimes they seem to have evolved from two entirely different streaks of algae.

wait and see.. in a few years... maybe us females will be asking the question.. why are there so few male programmers?... but the answer to that would probably be that we have out smarted the entire male race in EVERY field. ;P and to: "While a programmer needs to very creatively think "across borders" and in , absolute "problem focus" is what gets the job done. And while women tend to be better at the first, men are better on the latter." you obviously don't know many woman...woman are ALWAYS better on the latter  :)

My long term observation is that: 1) ladies in this "business" work harder (read as less socializing) during a work day but put in less hours, reluctance to work late nights / weekends -> family responsibilities. 2) are more thorough than male counterparts -> far more complete in analysis, design, testing and documentation. 3) are more stable, less childish than male counterparts who tend to have more of an ego involvment. 4) are more demanding (but better) in managerial roles. The greater strength of the male is on the creativity side of the equation, and the greater willingness to put in loooong hours. I would suspect the reason that the male / female posting ratio here supports the idea that few cpians are female is they tend to stop by to pick up an idea then go about their business while we tend to visit and stay. Just my $ 0.02 worth - Mike

i find that you can train the logical a -> b -> c stuff into your brain by just hard work ... the a -> f -> d -> z comes naturally and makes for good solutions developing can i say this then ... *sniggaz* ... men _tend_ to be better at actually producing the code and stuff but chikkies _tend_ to be better at organizing the whole solution? *borrows asbestos suit* :)

you can compensate for almost every "deficiency" with hard work - however, if a->-b->c requires no cognitive load (i.e. it's an one clock machine instruction), it's much easier to arrive at z then when a->b is a subroutine. I would like to add to the "more female" approach's description: that in parallel "a->b->v->x" and "a->y->r->v" and many others are evaluated, and recognizing "z" as solution is sometimes an additional challenge. Not that "this is how man think and that how women think" - but IMO men are more prone to launch less threads, but devote almost all processing power to the onethat looks most promising; whereas women tend to launch more threads, and treat them more fairly. lauren wrote: can i say this then ... *sniggaz* no problem with that ;) yes if a min amount of the technical insight is there (which requires some experience with and prior dedication to the a->b->c processing). A good programmer, and a good project project manager, will need to have a fair amount of both, otherwise they are just code monkeys or clueless ties. Not to forget: women tend to be better at social skills (not always concious), which can do a great deal of project managment, too ;)

There are several fields where women are unrepresented for no apparent reason; the two that pop into mind are motorcycle and automobile racing. Believe it or not, I think there's a parallel. In motor racing, most drivers were heavily involved as kids--it's more than Dads (and Moms) pushing it, they become car nerds, er, nuts. And then there's the competitive, generally without grudges, angle Likewise, most the programmers I know are techno-geeks, or were for the first ten years in the business. Even when they get burned out, they still pay attention to the dry news report that company x increased processor speed by so much (like the car geeks ears perk up when a company gets 5 more horse power out of an engine.) My point is, that relatively few women are techno-geeks or car nuts for that matter, as teenagers and I think that shapes choices when going into college. (My teenage daughter keeps pictures of high end cars which is considered odd by all her girl friends, but not her guy friends.)

Too true! I will say this tho (as a woman programmer) - I totally dig working in an otherwise all male IT dept. None of the bitchy crap that the receptionist types go in for, and at work I'm just one of the guys. At home, I get the luxury of being a married woman. The best of both worlds ;):rose: The following statement about your geekness is true.

then, of course, you're caught in an recursion trap and the universe will collapse to a black dot. (or a pink dot, if the universe was made by a woman )

i find that you can train the logical a -> b -> c stuff into your brain by just hard work ... the a -> f -> d -> z comes naturally and makes for good solutions developing can i say this then ... *sniggaz* ... men _tend_ to be better at actually producing the code and stuff but chikkies _tend_ to be better at organizing the whole solution? *borrows asbestos suit* :)

Honestly Lauren, I worked for a long time in a place where the programmers were roughly mixed and I think as a general statement you are bang on the mark there, to the point where I'd say most women are useless coders and most men are useless organisers. Just my experience but well summarised. Paul
