If someone suddenly offered to finance you a couple of million dollars for you to create your dream application, what would that project be? It has to be something you've always wanted to work on but never had the time or resources. For me, I think it would be the ultimate suite of reverse engineering tools.

I have no such dream projects; I do what I can with the time and resources I have. But, then again, would the money be up front? :~ Edit: OK, after further thought about a few projects I haven't implemented... :drum roll: ... I'd port CMS (the Code Management System for OpenVMS) to Windows. Or reverse engineer it, something I've thought about off and on over the last eight years ago. I may still have my notes from back then. However, now that I have two AlphaServers running OpenVMS I don't have a need for a Windows version of CMS anymore.

A carpenter dreams of creating a beautiful house. An astronomer dreams of discovering an earth-like planet. A physicist dreams of creating the unified field theory. You have no dream programming project?

I personally don't need money to create my dream application, however I do need money to sell my dream application. So I would probably spend all that money hiring good sales people.

But you neglected to mention what that dream application would be! That was the point of the question.

Developing the next disruptive programming language (and libraries). (Of course, we are talking about technical dream project there!)

The astronomer and physicist may never achieve the goal no matter how much money is thrown at him. What they seek may not exist. The carpenter might be able to achieve the goal, even if he builds it for someone else. The carpenter may also choose to build a small version (a dog house or play house perhaps) with the time and resources he has. That's what I do; when I get an idea, I develop it as far as I can. I may conceive of features I don't have time to implement or hurdles I'd have to overcome to create a marketable product, but I do what I can. I have several such working/rough products. I generally don't subscribe to the "What I can conceive and believe I can achieve" school of thought, but I have found that's it's pretty much true for software. You say you dream of writing reverse engineering tools; are you working on that? Have you gotten at least a quick prototype of just one part working? If not, get going on it, there all sorts of benefits in the effort. Bear in mind that the dog house may be a good tool for the carpenter to use to sell his idea to a venture capitalist.

:) Actually working on some space vehicle software must be quite nice.

Your answer is clearly not in the spirit of what was asked. I didn't ask, "What is your best lecture for setting and achieving realistic goals?"

The money is not the point. I'm just asking what you would like to work on if you didn't have to worry about doing it to support yourself.
