I assume one of the world's oldest jokes started "A Neanderthal and an orangutan walk into a cave..."

I would point out that Orangutangs did not exist at the time of the Neanderthals, they evolved afterwards. Perhaps "A Neanderthal and a Cro-Magnon walked into a cave..."

Hi Dave, I'm so happy to know you are re-writing evolutionary history using your remarkable gifts for "facts" :) ! In order to help you more clearly be originally creative in making up "new facts," perhaps looking at some older "facts" would be helpful to avoid accidental duplication of "true" facts : like Schwartz' and Grehan's research which suggests both humans and orangutans descend from a common ancestor they call "dental hominids"[^] Here's something that will fit right into your book, the "fact" that one Big Mac is equal to 114 minutes of sex : "[^] Clearly demonstrates that the Big Mac was invented by women as an ultimate challenge, and accounting for the evolutionary fact of males hunting in groups. No, you don't need to credit me, man; just throw my words in the bong with what you are smoking for flavour :) best, Bill

"Many : not conversant with mathematical studies, imagine that because it [the Analytical Engine] is to give results in numerical notation, its processes must consequently be arithmetical, numerical, rather than algebraical and analytical. This is an error. The engine can arrange and combine numerical quantities as if they were letters or any other general symbols; and it fact it might bring out its results in algebraical notation, were provisions made accordingly." Right ok but 100,000 ago there would have been the ANCESTOR of the Orangutang, not an actual Orangutang. Neanderthals finally went extinct C30,000 years ago. but were very much reduced in number prior to that and really only existed for the final 10,000 in western europe, (Portugal predominantly). Modern man existed from C100,000 years ago, although modern-like man from 200,000 (increase in brain pan and reduction of mandible). Certainly there were no Neanderthals in Borneo EVER, and so a Neanderthal and an Orangutang could never have walked into a bar. Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon did co-exist, and there is evidence of trade between them. See here[^] for further details.

Earth to Brother Dave, I guess I should expect a diversion on a joke-thread, but I didn't expect you to send me a link to 9 year old article which is about a study of a very small "population" (255 individuals), in which there is no mention of any of ["Neanderthal,"Cro-Magnon," "Orangutan," "Borneo," "Portugal," "Bars"]. The conclusion of the study modestly (and appropriately) states that it re-inforces other research suggesting that greater African genetic diversity supports the hypothesis of African origin of the human species. It also points out interesting facts about variations in genetic diversity in Finland, Scandinavia, and Britain. Did you just pull the first thing you found as you went-a-Googling ? If you wanted to really "send me up," I would have recommended Julian Jaynes' old book "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind," or even the very old and esoteric Robert Graves' "The White Goddess." If you want to talk to me in this "arena," I want to hear names like Dawkins, Riddley, Dennet, Wells, Cavalli-Sforza (and the controversies surrounding his research), E. O. Wilson, the late S. J. Gould, and so forth; I want to hear about studies involving thousands of individuals, and I want to hear about specific archaeolgical finds, as well as palaeontological studies. This "arena" (of evolutionary inter-relatedness of primate species) is a wondrous evolving "hothouse" in the last decade. The discovery, by the National Geographic's Genographic Project, within the last two years, I believe, of proto-Aryan genes in isolated groups of the Mongols is an example of the continuing discoveries that are amazing ! Since I like the idea that I should post as I wish to be responded to, may I suggest that, with your gift for "language" (no irony intended there; I really believe you have some unusual linguistic talent as evinced in your CCC's), you may really enjoy Stephen Pinker's "The Language Instinct : How the Mind Creates Language." The single best book I've ever read on human language ! "The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled." Plutarch regards, Bill

That was a very long reply to me taking the piss! I was merely pointing out Originally that a Neanderthal and an Orangutang would never have walked into a bar together! OK Here is a serious point though. Why, when they were bigger than us, stronger than us and had a larger brain pan than us, did the Neanderthal not make US extinct? I have no proof nor can I call on research, it is merely an idea that I have, but I think we inherited more of the Agression that is also seen in Chimps, whereas they inherited more of the sociality as seen in Bonobos and Gorillas. Just a thought, but a serious one.

Hi Brother Dave, mmmm ... okay, how do you know my response to you wasn't just my using the pissoir next to you, and draining my lizard ? ... ... but the recommendation of Pinker's book to you was "serious" ... I think you'll find it delightful and challenging. As a writer, Pinker is a talented story-teller, raconteur, as well as scientist ! I'd skip the part where he actually explains Chomsky's theories for "mere mortals," though. The question of how the Neanderthals got blottoed, and the extent to which they might have interbred with Homo Sap-Whatever (the Portugese finds you may have been implying are subjects of controversy), for how long, is one "holy grail" of a question, and I believe there will be some answers forthcoming in your lifetime (but probably not in mine). Were they species of hominid or sub-species of Homo-Sap ? While I read that recent stuides of Neanderthal cranial capacity indicate their larger brains had an average capacity less than that of contemporary Homo-Saps ... I'd be lying if said I could really critically interpret that research. Right now there's many different theories in a state of flux ranging from the "technical superiority" theory to theories based on "climate," to theories based economic factors ("trade"). And probably more theories being hatched right now. best, Bill
