I have a request from a manager to see if I can convert something from a PDF to an XL Spreadsheet. I thought, I know, I will google that. I found this[^]. I am a naturally suspicious person, who does not like my machine talking to strange computers, so I thought I would ask here. Has anyone used this? or can they recommend a PDF > XL Converter?

Can't you just copy/paste it from acrobat into excel? [edit] on a sidenote, did you know Excel is a fully functioning web browser? - Open excel, bring up the open dialog, and type http://codeproject.com in the filename box Cross your fingers, and be prepared to :omg: :wtf:

You could export from PDF as text and then paste it into excel (actually, pasting it into something like Word makes more sense, but that depends on the content of the PDF file).

Having seen what Excel 07 does to the layout, I think calling it a web browser would be a little far-fetched ;P

Given the layout, 'functioning' is too strong a word.

What, oh wise one, would you advise? (Also, everyone uses Excel here, so I write stuff so that the simpletons can enter data using it, then I can trawl that to grab what I need for Databases and Management Reports.)

MS word will give a completely different godawful rendering. As you're cringing inside remember that this is the same html "renderer" that outlook uses and that all major senders of html based email have to create something that works with it. IF you want something really beyond fubar try opening the lounge in powerpoint. Access07 won't open web pages. Access03 prompts for a datasource, and after that dia log is canceled ends up rendering it better than any other MS app I tried (bust still with all the messages expanded). Infopath07 pukes because cp's html isn't xml. Publisher07 spits out a warning about not supporting tables beyond 128x128 and displays a mess that looks worse than excel's once it stops pretending to be hung. Project07 treats it as a plain text file and opens the import wizard.

I actually had to convert a 26 page to Excel yesterday. While Acrobat has a "copy to table" option, I found that the formatting was messed up if a column contained blank cells. I downloaded a free trial of Able2Extract from http://www.investintech.com/pdftoxls.html[^] and had all 26 pages converted in a few minutes.

PS Does anyone know what exactly browsers put on the clipboard when coping an html table (or cssed construct that looks like one)? Excel can normally display the IE paste properly, the FF/Opera pastes have never been anything but a disgusting mess.
