Windows 7 first impressions

1. I love the new animated logo on startup. Ooh! Bright and shiny! I think this is an indication I am way, way too jaded. 2. Startup/shutdown is fast. Way faster than XP and Vista, and on my crappy old notebook Windows 7 feels snappier than XP. 3. UAC is now helpful and sensible. True - I've been putting up with MacOS asking me for a username and password everytime I so much as sneeze or look funny at it, so my expectations of what is reasonable have been battered into submission, but compared to MacOS, the Windows 7 UAC is polite and unobtrusive and best of all it's a single click. No more "Yes *click*..YES...*click*...For the Love of...!! *click*" episodes. 4. Lots of little things have been cleaned up in the UI and the thing is I'm only aware of them after the fact. I have Windows 7 on the laptop and Vista on the desktop and I can just find things more easily on the laptop. Subtle but valuable changes. 5. Getting drivers for the laptop is still the same nightmare it always is, but the system restore works well and reasonably efficiently. I'm giving it a single thumb's up.

Most noticeable change, IMHO. I don't feel like i'm stuck playing Myst nearly as often, looking for a tiny link somewhere that'll take me to a control panel that used to be directly accessible. Search tends to work better as well, though still lame compared to Launchy. The speed is the big deal. I went from Vista SP2 to Windows 7 on an old laptop and it went from frustratingly sluggish to perfectly usable. Without better drivers or any hardware upgrades. That's huge.

Was just handed my Weven DVD. I'm going to install it in a VM and toy with it before I commit to putting it on an actual machine that I use, but from what you guys have said so far, it sounds promising.

Well, this is a relief... I just ordered a new gaming rig... Chose to get it with Vista, because that includes a free Weven upgrade... Was worried I'd have to go buy another copy of XP to upgrade it back to something usable.

I've been using since the Beta and the more I use it the more I like it. Like you say its the little things that make a difference. They seemed to have got their collective acts together on this one, or at least gathered it into one place. :) I also give it a thumbs up and would not go back to XP! Mike

Odd. In my normal use of my wife's MBP I never get asked for a username or password.
