Windows 7 x86

I thought there was some news that Windows 7 will only come out in x64 only? Or is it for Windows Server 2008?

Both are false.

No. Windows 7 will be the final Windows version to ship in both x86 and x64 versions.

No. Windows Server 2008 is the last server OS with an x86 version.

Actually, I'm quite sure that Windows Server 2008 will be the last to support x86.

That sounds more likely. I gather there is a trend towards making all their server products 64-bit only, e.g., Exchange Server.

This cracks me up. x86 comes in 16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit varieties. So, yes, Windows 7 is x86 (but not all x86.) (Does Microsoft even do builds any more of MIPS or other processors, at least just for kicks and giggles?)

Rumor has it there is an x12 build for PDP-8 compatibilty.

Dunno if this is offtopic, but to note: At Assembly'09 there was Microsoft sponsored competition to run 7 in "crappiest" system possible. http://www.assembly.org/summer09/compos/sponsored-unofficial/microsoft_competitions_2009?set_language=en[^] I couldnt find link to results, maybe theyre released in Web after the party. Also I cannot remember exactly the system specs but I think it was 130mhz P2 with (this I remember right) 8 megabytes memory.

Do you have a cite for that? If W8 comes out in the next few years there'll probably be an x86 version for the same reason there is for weven. Mobile atoms don't support x64 (the desktop version does); which means there'll be a lot of new hardware that won't run x64.
