Hi all. Now that I've been 40 years old for several months, I'm beginning to be haunted by comments friends of mine made when I was 39... each telling me what would be the first thing to go. The ones that were younger than 40 were just giving me a hard time of course, but I paid attention to the ones who were over 40. The one comment that seemed to come back again and again was "the eyes" - "the muscles in your eyes will start to go shortly after you turn 40" was a prediction made by a friend about me. I'm beginning to think she was right! My eyes lately are starting to give me problems, and in some weird ways. I think I need a trip to the eye doctor and maybe a set of glasses. For the 40+'ers out there, what was the "first thing to go" for you? I still feel like a little kid in many ways (the good kinds :-) ) but I think my eyes are feeling their age.

For me it too was the eyes. I noticed one day that everything I reading I was holding at arms length (a couple of months after I turned 40). So off I went to the eye doctor where the first question that was asked was are you 40 yet? :((

For me: weight, high blood pressure and eyes... I still don't have glasses yet, but just cuz when I went to the eye doc, he said he wouldn't prescribe any since my vision is on the edge and I probably wouldn't wear em anyway. Mostly just for readin'. Otherwise I'm fine.

If your eyes are going, get your ears pierced! Sailors believed this, and there is some evidence that it is the case although it is counter-intuitive. It is thought to be akin to acupuncture.

Oh, huh, I have my left ear pierced (twice), but not the right. I've worn (rather strong) glasses since I was ten.

What problem do you have with your eyes? I'm guessing that it's seeing things at a distance. People who don't get that by the time they turn 40 generally have problems seeing things up close, as the OP referred to.

Yea I can see approx 15cm's close by, but who wants that? It's more useful to be able to look at the horizon - and see it :)

Oh, huh, I have my left ear pierced (twice), but not the right. I've worn (rather strong) glasses since I was ten.

Hmm. That probably puts to rest the reason my Mum told me I'd go blind - unless you were an early developer. (and I'm not talking cutting code)

Hi Mike, Age 40 was when I "jumped ship" from being on track for a Ph.D. in the social sciences to playing with computers : the first thing that went was the wife. best, Bill

This is an error. The engine can arrange and combine numerical quantities as if they were letters or any other general symbols; and it fact it might bring out its results in algebraical notation, were provisions made accordingly."
