:sigh: I used to love afghans. A cold winter night, curled up on the davenport with a steaming cup of hot chocolate and a warm afghan... hard to beat. But this is the last straw. I'm switching to lap blankets.

That's awesome. I know a few people out at Intel that keep those in their cubicles. Time to forward...

Yeah, I saw it last night and I was going to post it but then I just gave up. Somehow, this will be blamed on Islam and I just didn't have the energy to fight this. Maybe, just maybe people will realize its them and not Islam to blame? The law is just despicable and horrible. And this by Karzai (spelling?) essentially a puppet.

Shameful. X| Is this the 'progressive' Govt the USA had in mind when it threw out the Taliban? Only a couple of years ago, there was this man who was sentenced to death for converting to Christianity. He had to be shipped off to Italy. These people are barbarians.

That's the part I don't understand - Karzai is a puppet of the USA*, not the Taliban extremists, so why is he behaving worse than them? Is he trying to woo the conservative voters by showing he's all gung-ho about (arguably, what they believe is) Islamic law? Trying to tell them, "Look, I'm badass too! You don't need the Taliban, I can oppress da bitches as well!"? * Or at best, the West, although India backs him as well because we know how friendly the Taliban are towards us. (Does anybody remember the Kandahar hijack incident? One of the lowest and most shameful points in Indian history.)

Because large fractions of the US are no longer willing to back a puppet who however much of a strongman he actually is doesn't have his authority come from at least a veneer of democracy. This greatly limits our (or any other outsiders) ability to demand that the nomimal puppet doesn't do <Thing Which We Find Reprehensible> as a sop to his locally elected nutjobs.

Sorry, I don't quite buy that. 1. The Afghan Govt would be toppled in a matter of months if not weeks if Nato were to withdraw - so the USA is still behind him. 2. The USA has no qualms about backing other oppressive regimes, such as Saudi Arabia or Egypt - so why would the USA look for a democratic regime specifically in Afghanistan? 3. Today, if democratic elections were to be held in Afghanistan, there is a strong chance the Taliban would come into power. This hard lesson about the Islamic world was learnt a couple of years ago when Hamas came to power in democratic elections in Palestine. Ironically enough, this may mean that true democracy in Afghanistan (and arguably, much of the Middle East) would be against the interests of the West (and perhaps even India). I think the West has to support the lesser of two evils, no matter how much Karzai leans towards the extremists himself (which is probably because the majority of voters are hardliners themselves).

Sorry for the late reply Vikram Karzai holds little sway beyond the Presidential palace. There are no glasses rosy enough to make anyone believe that the Taliban has lost in Afghanistan. They're just retreating. The only answer to solving that problem comes in a two-fold solution. 1. Getting the people out of poverty and therefore, less on the reliance of the Taliban's drug money 2. Getting the people educated (some 60%-80% of the population is illiterate by some accounts) and therefore, they find out more about their religion than what gets told to them by a Takfiri group like the Taliban.

That's what I think it is. Referring to the rate of illiteracy, I'll add that although the overwhelming majority of the population is Muslim, they know next to nothing about their religion. I've met enough Afghani refugees to know and boy are they arrogant in their ignorance. But they can't be blamed, its because of what gets fed to them all the time by the Taliban/Al-Qaeda. Both are what are called Takfiri groups (not Salafist as some might refer to them. BIG difference). Salafist are those that want to live in as similar a manner as possible during the reign of the Prophet Mohammed and the 4 caliphs that followed, where the adherence to Islam was the closest (notice, not strictest, the difference is subtle but big). Takfiri groups on the other hand, refer to anyone that doesn't believe in the same way they do as infidels, and by their definition, I and possibly an overwhelming majority of the Muslim world would fall under that definition. It is quite amusing to note that in one of the Hadeeth's of the Prophet, he names those who label others as infidels as infidels themselves who have reserved their place in the fires of hell. So many Afghani's don't know that for example, and if they did, I doubt they'd follow the Taliban.

I doubt its that, its more of showing the Afghani people that his conservatism is another alternate conservatism and if they "stray" from the Taliban's path, they still would be on the "right" path. Teachers should be sent, not soldiers, although that is quite moot since

I agree completely - illiteracy is the main reason behind the poverty and underdevelopment that lie behind most of the Third World's problems.

You complete idiot. Not only do you feel the need to make your pathetic message stand out more by making it big and red, you display such an ignorant point of view that I don't even know where to begin in correcting it.

                                  1. You're being a racist bigot
                                  2. Not every Muslim is a terrorist
                                  3. You've used the term jihad incorrectly
                                  4. You've used the term infidel incorrectly
                                  5. You assume that the person you're replying to has an AK47

And you had the nerve to call me scum. It's not people who tolerate evil who are the most evil of all, it's those who perpetrate and continue it. And you're continuing it in your racism. That makes you the scum of the earth. If you continue that, then you'll die alone; then again, if you continue it, you'll deserve to.

Racism is different than dislike for what a person believes. I judge not by race, but by character. Fuck islam.

Sounds all tea and crackers until you realize that you are overwhelmed by the islamics who will take over your country and way of life. Don't be stupid. They have much greater willpower than you and are devoted to their religion. If you continue to be a weak neo-modern submissive then you will be dominated.

I find it sad and pitiful that you view an absence of hatred as weakness and submissiveness, when in fact it shows strength beyond measure. It shows everybody who reads your messages the type of person you are.
