what this might mean in a tender we're doing: 'Passwords should not be echo-plexed' I can't find anything meaningful on google other than 'The process of checking the reception of sound for echoes' in Wiktionary:confused: Not sure how that relates to passwords... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Why not ask the people who wrote it in the first place?

It's an old (probably obsolete) term from the days of Visual Display Terminals. It means "should not be shown on the screen as they are typed". About one scroll down for definition[^]

"echo-plexed" I think it has something to do with GhostBusters!

Back in those days, that was the easy way to say it

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

By the way that definition is worded, I would guess that this is more of a security issue. "Of course this is a security issue" you say? Well, it is more of a security issue than you are probably thinking... Are you aware that old CRT monitors can be read using electronics from up to about 50ft away....even from another room? The signal that displays the characters on a screen don't stop moving as soon as you see it. As a result, echoing what someone types back to the screen is potentially sharing that password with anyone that has the right equipment setup to sniff it out.

The meaning that immediately poped into my mind was the tape delay echo machine that John Martyn used to use to create his incredible soundscapes - e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew6P_KoEPzc. A sadly missed musician I had the luck to see live a couple of times.

It's not just CRTs although the signals used to control the electron beam in them were much larger. Your DVI cable leaks RF as well. IIRC the same can be done with the signals on your keyboards USB cable, but a quick google check didn't turn anything up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Eck_phreaking[^]

Well, the "-plex" suffix means to have multiple parts. So I would guess it means to not echo something to more than one spot.
