I sure hope so. If that was before breakfast I'd see a doctor.

Wow, using an actual boat? I resort to a rowing machine. Less fresh air, but also less weather dependent ;) Also I get myself instant rewards for doing this by watching an episode of some series, 40-45 minutes each. Worked my way through all seasons of Babylon 5 and almost one season of Stargate by now. Ok, now I only need to up my frequency to more than once a week ... :-D

Indeed. I own my own boat and I toddle up and down the Thames in it. Me in my boat :) [^]

I do the same as well, I've got my rowing machine less than 2m away. Although I do it for 2 episodes. It's a bit of a pain having to change it over sometimes, but it gives me a break. It's even more annoying when I'm watching 20min episodes.

I run 4.5 mi. every day. I eat smart--a Big Mac a month, and a milkshake a month, but other than that, very little red meat. Lots of fish and veggies. Depressing? Far from it. Once I got used to it, I found that I actually prefer it. I skipped the Big Mac last month. Oh yes--the payoff: I lost fifty pounds in six months (please, no Brit jokes about doing that in a night of cards), and I'm in my best shape in thirty years. I hike the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim twice a year. And I feel great. Not bad for pushing sixty.

Sissy: http://runningbarefoot.org/[^] Actually in all seriousness you should read up before you buy a pair because a lot of people find that the more heavily padded the shoes the more likely you are to get injured. I'd buy a pair of these [^]if they sold them around here.

i'm actually planning on getting a pair of 5fingers - because i am trying to find a way to avoid the constant knee/foot/hip pain running normally causes. i just didn't want to get into the whole explanation of them :)

I take Muay Thai Kickboxing twice a week and sparring on Fridays. I also use an exercise ball to sit on at my desk. It keeps the abs engaged during the day and really does help.

I've recently tried doing something about this. We all sit in front of a screen/whiteboard for 8-10hrs a day right? So I've tried to find some things I can do for that block of time. So far I've come up with: A) Balancing on a yoga balance ball instead of an office chair - works the abs, side abs, and lower back B) Keep a hand weight near the desk - compiling, building, waiting for unit tests = curling time it's too soon to tell how well its working, but I figure if I was working out even at a low tempo for 8-10hrs EVERY DAY, i'd be pretty toned up. anyone else trying this sort of thing?

I play drums every day for about an hour (Heavy Rock -n- Roll) and go to the gym twice a week for weight lifting.

I've worn through my first pair, and I wouldn't want to run in anything else.

Cool! I bought running shoes from a running store where they properly fit them and choose the right style etc about 5 years ago and they are still going strong. They have very thin soles and almost no padding in the heel and I've never had any injuries, but I've been interested in trying the 5fingers unfortunately I'd have to buy them online and I don't know how I'd end up with a pair that fit properly that way. Let me know how it goes please. I've always been a natural flat to forefoot striker when running anyway so it wasn't a big adjustment. Probably because as a kid I used to run around all the time in bare feet and there's no way you can strike heel first in bare feet, at least you sure wouldn't want to after the first couple of strides. :) I can't understand how anyone could run striking heel first but apparently there are a *lot* of people who do.

Hey cool, I just posted before I read your post, I've been dipping my toe in the crossfit waters lately doing the high intensity interval stuff and kettlebells etc. I don't currently have a pull up bar but I'm going to build a freestanding one after coming across some plans on the crossfit message board. I couldn't physically do all the crossfit stuff at the moment but I like everything I've been doing and have stuck with it for a few months now and will add more and more as I'm able. No crossfit gyms around here but that's probably for the best anyway, cheaper to do it yourself as long as you have a convenient wife also willing and you can check each other's form.

It is astounding to me how much of difference in effectiveness there is between the high intensity stuff and everything I had done before that. My wife is an avid cross-fitter, and I can see how having the schedule and the coach have really helped her. I like working out in my backyard and don't want to give that up, but I realize that I'd be making more progress at one of the gyms. Another change which was almost as big was cutting out gluten from my diet, and eating far fewer grains. scientific american article on gluten[^]. I'm not eating fully paleo, but much closer then I had in the past and it's really helped my body composition and energy levels.

I started walking at lunch and taking the stairs about a year ago, and added basketball for an hour twice a week. Since then, I've lost nearly 70 pounds, going from 320 pounds down to roughly 250 - 260 pounds. :) Flynn
That's phenomenal.

I started going for a 4 kilometer walk every day, one week ago. I don't know how much weight I've lost, because now I'm 28k from home :)

Same here as well. I work from home and there are no gyms around here doing crossfit anyway.

Same here as well. For me one of the biggest changes was cutting out sugar. At first I found it hard to eat enough carbs as veggies. I was making stir fries with mountains of broccoli, but I realized how many carbs are in beans and it's much easier to add some beans to cut back a bit on the veggies. We were pretty farty when we switched over to those kinds of meals but it went away within a week or so, I think the body adapts to what you eat. Strangely when we went camping we ate a lot of hot dogs and they really made the wind fly where all the beans and cabbage and broccoli in the world wasn't. :) I just took a week off dieting and exercise entirely while on a camping trip and ate and drank at will though getting a lot of exercise and when I came back I had gained 8 pounds, in one week! If it's a choice between proper diet and exercise I think diet is the first place to start, you can eat a lot of calories pretty quickly and easily but exercising off the same amount of calories is a hell of a lot of work. I like the zone diet because I never feel hungry and it clearly has very noticeable benefits of all kinds in quite a short amount of time. It's tricky when you're trying to lose fat while still doing the crossfit style workouts; balancing getting enough blocks in the day with the energy you need while still losing the fat, but I think I've got it worked out right now. I make home made sourdough bread and have always found that a small slice keeps me going for hours where store bought bread seems to burn right through me and apparently it's because naturally leavened sourdough is much lower glycemic than regular breads due to the yeast and bacteria action which consumes a lot of the gluten so I haven't cut out bread entirely but it hasn't seemed to matter. I only eat my own bread and probably no more than a few slices a week. Most store bought sourdough though is just regular bread with lactic acid added to fake the sourdough flavour, it's nothing like the real thing. According to

Wow, that's four of us in this thread so far, didn't realize there were so many others who knew about crossfit, it seems like something I wouldn't picture a typical computer programmer having any interest in but I guess I should know better. :)

My sister started crossfit with her personal trainer, one of the most effective workouts I have seen so far. She is down 40 lbs over the last 6 months and is now very fit. Then again, its like all workouts, you get out what you put into it.
