Thanks - it looked interesting until I got to the bit "This is a beta...and will expire in November 2009". I don't install beta software on my working machine, not since the incident. I don't want to talk about it.

This looks very good, but too much of 3D, would take some time to make use of it. My desktop gets cluttered frequently with all the documents/Folder that I create and open temporarily. Fences actually groups the icons in simple titled boxes. Very simple idea, but works great for me!

Yeah! I agree there is too much 3D. It is fancy nonetheless.

I'm concerned of Beta as well, but took the risk as I wanted this desperately. I hope this Beta doesn't mess up my system. but, so far so good...

I hope not too, but the fun will come when it expires / gets replaced with the release version... Good luck! I tend to keep mine as folders of shortcuts on my task bar, next to the system tray - works for me.

The tool's author should, at least, mention where he got the idea from, not propagate it as his own. KDE4 can do this since the beginning of its existence.

Meh, I already organized all of my icons around the edges of my desktop based on the type of programs such as media players/media codec configuration, dvd burning/iso mounting, photo editing programs, etc. All this does is wastes desktop space by adding pretty header.

my solution is pretty simple: turn on auto-arrange / align to grid. then i delete things when i see more than three columns of icons. i put all of my essential apps in the quick-launch bar.

I can't believe I'm the first to say this, but the best solution for a cluttered desktop is to highlight all and press delete, then enter. desktop icons are inefficient and should never be used. Try an app like SlickRun(XP/Vista) or Gnome Do(Ubuntu). You'll never waste your time again "organizing" your desktop, or even searching through it. While you're at it, you could even set your desktop background with some uber sweet image. You'll only see it during boot up, screen lock, and shut down though. just my 2 cents... well, maybe 5 cents in this post

Hmmmmm looks like this tool is not necessary for those who plan and organize their desktop on regular basis or neatly arrange/group thier icons. I think Its for people like me who wont delete anything on desktop for months, keep all their working files on the desktop. I have a minimum 20-30 documents/icons on my desktop which I would be using very frequently. So, I cant simply move them to other folders or delete them.

But those borders are not flat enough!
Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

At the moment I have 6 columns and 12 rows although most of these could be deleted I do not bother.

i can already do this today by creating folders on my desktop. why do i need some probably virus-ridden tool to do what i can already do?

I glanced at your post too quickly, and read it as feces, which made me do a serious double take. I've found Lysol works fine for me.

Can you view the contents of folder, without actually opening the folder?

yes, you can make them stick "open" to your desktop
