Just be glad Vista isn't giving you a UAC for each file... "An application tried to delete this file. Are you sure you want to let it?"

Do it from the command prompt. I know this is 2009, but seriously, some things are faster from the good ol' command prompt.

Cheers, Vikram. (Proud to have finally cracked a CCC!)

I'm sorry, but that's 3000% completely unacceptable. Seriously, deleting local files shouldn't be this hard. Somewhere I remember reading a quasi-logical excuse for this, but still, it's absofugging ridiculous.

I read that and felt a sudden urge to throw out my poor computer which is not running Vomista.

That's my intention, but Vomista sounds closer to Vista than Vomitista/Vomitsta and its still obvious what I mean. I think.

Ah! The oddity of the Vista file deletion. I don't get why it takes so long to delete files in that OS. Its not a big deal, just mystifying as to why it can be noticably longer than anything else. I put in a sweet screaming 5 drive Raid 5 array, and it doesn't speed up file deletion a lick. Go figure. Makes me want to dig out a copy of Norton Commander from somewhere. I am happy though that it is one of the very very few 'issues' I have had with it (Vista) however. :)

It's not vista specific. Deleting a stupid of files from the XP explorer will take an insanity vs doing so from the command prompt.

Why not? It took him probably hours and days to create those files. All system is asking is 41 minutes. Isn't that a reasonable demand?

You've got it all wrong. This uncovers the ancillary problem which is that the system doesn't help with the original creation of those files so that it takes 41 minutes.

you can continue your game of Solitaire in the mean time, after all Windows is a multitasking OS. It just takes some time to check your credentials for each and every file, as those files may have different protection levels, and your credentials might change while things are simmering in the background... :)

I believe, then, that you'll be needing a 24 SSD drive RAID machine[^]. Cheers, Drew.

I purged old builds from our build machine a couple of weeks ago; it took over four hours to delete around 750G of data.
