Easy way to share big files...
-
Hello all, I want to share videos of the machines we make with my customers and I've been able to see that they are having big troubles using FTP... it seems that they can't get to download the files even I give them the full path: ftp://username:password@ip_address. I would like to give them the possibility to download the files in an effortlessly way. The main issue here is that I can't use skydrive or similar software due to their limitations of space for each file. I need to share big video files from 200MB to 500MB more or less. In my ISP I can't get more than 500MB of space so this is neither an option. What would you do? Notice that a free option is what we are searching for. Another issue here is that in my company we have 2MB DSL so imagine the speed it takes when we upload something... X| Any hint will be appreciated, of course I won't be able to tell you anything else than that I will pay you a beer if you come to Artés, but even this will unlikely happen, I'll be glad to see how our wonderful community show his magic knowledge again...

You are a bit stuck with the upload speed, as you can't realy compress the files - .AVI and so forth are pretty well compressed anyway - Matroska is better, but you frequently need a codec to view these. Why not take a tip from some of the naughtier sites out there: when they share big files, they split them up, and join them together when they are downloaded. I've tried this before with some Email accounts that don't like big attachments, and it works fine. Try FFSJ[^] which can also password protect the files if needed. When it splits, it creates files called "myMachine.avi.001", "myMachine.avi.002" and so on, and re-assembles to "myMachine.avi" when done.

I've gotta start remembering to put the referral address! The extra 3 gig would come in handy.

I'd use bittorrent; it's free, it prevents most accidental corruption during downloading, you don't need to rely on any server (not even a tracker, you could be a tracker yourself and there is DHT), it scales well, but a downside is that initially (when you're the only seed) it won't be fast - it will get better over time but it takes a while. 700MB isn't even considered big for a torrent. Just an idea of course - it's how I spread most of my "big stuff", it has worked for me so far

Rename the files to IngloriousBasterds[Perfect 1080i, honest].mpg and stick them on a torrent. You'll have a million spotty kids helping you by using their parents' bandwidth within minutes.

I went with the Pro 50 subscription after being so impressed with the trial. At one time I may have poured scorn on the whole idea of cloud computing, but Dropbox has convinced me that there are some highly useful applications for it.

You can split files with 7-zip too, which alot of people have already... or should have in my opinion! ;P

I'd use pipebytes (http://www.pipebytes.com[^]). Here are the features from website: * No software to install. All you need is web browser. * No hassle registrations, and we don't even asking your e-mail address! * Send files of any size! * Your buddy could start downloading file as you upload it. * It's private unlike BitTorrent or other P2P techologies. * The file is not shared on Internet - it is sent directly to your recipient. * Free Widget for your web pages. * SSL secured

I'm so willing to bet that that would work (and spectacularly well), that I'm tempted to set it up. Problem 1: I have no idea how to make a torrent file. Does anyone know the address of LMGTFY?

I still pour scorn on cloud computing. I liked Drop Box but I have no use for it, taking anything offsite is a sackable offence.
