I alternate between listening to mp3s, or listening to the radio (I got a neat little £10 radio that plugs into the USB port of the PC, so it doesn't need batteries, and lets me switch stations from a winamp like interface) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

I find that Windows Media player is cool for that too - a lot of radio stations stream live these days :-D

I sympathize with you, I also find the mere presence of someone else in the room distracting. It doesn't matter if I can't hear them, I just would prefer to be alone, when I work. The other thing that bugs me is people who don't knock when they open the door. If I'm deep in thought, I don't realize that they are there, until I get a big surprise. Regardz Colin J Davies

I used to have the same problem since I always listen to the laud music with headphones on so I can't much of what is going on around me. I solved it by simply sticking the wide-angle blind spot eliminating rear mirror in the corner of my monitor so I can see what is happening behind me. The mirror is one of these small ones (about one inch in diameter), with the sticker on the back, that you normally place on the actual mirror rear of your car.

I'm finding myself coming in to the office really early or leaving really late, and working over the weekends. I like the person I work with but somehow I never get anything done unless it is just me, the hiss of the aircon and my pc. I know this is a bad thing. One needs to work with others all the time. Any advice? well hell doesn't want you and heaven is full. Tom Waits

Oh yeah, so hate not having my own space. I like to be able to hammer away at a project in silence without the phones blurting all over the place. I mean I once worked with a guy who must have had something wrong with him, he'd hum and tap his feet and twitch like mad, I mean sing the first bar of a TV show theme and he'd be off humming it all day. :wtf: Let us plead and scream for more home work, more flexible hours.... a return to closed offices.

          I HATE OPEN PLAN OFFICES

 Open plan doesn't increase communication, it annoys twenty people who don't want to hear Brian in Sales talking to Dick in Marketing about his new company car. It stops people going on the phone to a supplier with the correct f**k you attitude. Let us all now go plead with our bosses for walls, or time, or space. Jonathan Bond, BSc(H)

It's usually useful for me to have colleagues at hand to consult. But if I have to code something more complicated myself, I like to do it alone und undisturbed too. I usually stay at home to do it or do it over weekend. Pavel Sonork 100.15206

I have made several very helpfull discoveries. There are people who prefer working with others. I'm very lucky to be sharing an office and not a cubicle with another person. And I moved my PC so that my college is not sitting right behind me anymore. I think it was the feeling of something unseen lurking behind me that was so unsettling.;P well hell doesn't want you and heaven is full. Tom Waits

That sounds like a nice xmas present for my mum - she loves listening to the local oldies station, Classic Gold, but can't at work at the moment as the boss would not approve. Something like that would be just the ticket! [edit] Oh yeah, I was going to ask you a question theere but forgot to put in in! :-o What do I need to know to buy one of these, or where can I find one?

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/[^] then click on the Hifi/AV link Note that this little radio only picks up FM. You didn't specify if the station your mum listens to is FM or AM Be careful though - they like to charge stupid amounts for postage, so it's probably worth buying it along side other stuff to spread out the cost. Also keep an eye on their "today only" page (http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/[^]), as they like to put the radio in as a freebie with bundles (currently you get one free if you buy one of their ATI graphics cards.) Also it's worth noting that the software that comes with the radio is utter rubbish. You're much better off getting Radiator from http://flesko.cz/[^] (download their dlink driver too - don't even think of installing the one that comes with the radio!) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

Yes!!! I was very lucky in my last job. I had my own office with a window. One time they tried to put me in an office with a technical writer. He jabbered on the phone all day. It drove me crazy! I would be trying to read something in MSDN. I kept reading the same sentence over and over, unable to concentrate. I complained to my boss and he let me work from home. Then they gave me my office back. I'm job hunting now and I'm scared. I know most of us have to share an office and I don't know if I can do it. I find music just as distracting. I can't have the TV going in the background either. Maybe I could try classical or something with no words. Cathy Life's uncertain, have dessert first!

Have you thought about doing contracting work? That is what I want to do as soon as I have more working experience. The agent,I spoke to, at a contracting firm told me they have a programmer working for them who refuse to get a cell-phone and only have an answering machine and I thought "Yes!" well hell doesn't want you and heaven is full. Yes. Unfortunately I've heard that contractors are faring the worst in this job market. Most of the contractors I know took full time jobs when the economy started going bad. Cathy Life's uncertain, have dessert first!
