Traditionally, lorem ipsum was used by the printing and typesetting industry to layout text to form a sample book. It's not random, however, and has been widely attributed to the works of Cicero; namely his work De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (The extremes of good and evil). The work dates to something like 60 BC (give or take a decade). Isn't a classical education wonderful?

I hadn't realised that this was commonly posted on the web. Back when I studied Latin (and latin texts), we had to rely on these marvellous things called books. Still, I wasn't entirely accurate - I thought it was written earlier; sigh - it has been 30 years since I studied it, so I shouldn't be surprised if my memory is failing a bit.

The problem is I can't tell if it is the correct text or someone just did the greeking and the real text will appear at a later time. Maybe Cicero wasn't sure what he wanted to say and plugged all of that in so the layout could get done. :-D And yes, its called greeking in spite of the true origin. The benefits of a job in a print/copy shop at a younger age.

I see we had the same Latin text books at school. Ah, the nostalgia.
