Eh? :wtf: You were actually right (linky)[^]. I always thought it was the other way around. But I read somewhere the thumbs up is meant to represent cutting the throat or something.

Ah, Michael Macrone. What else was it he wrote? The Observer's book of poetry? Greek philosophy for dummies? As always, his case is stated with absolute certainty, with nothing to back it up. It is believed that the thumbs down probably meant the opposite of what we now think, but there is no definite evidence of it. It makes sense to me, though, so I'll continue to believe it without evidence.

I gave you 1 because I'm fashinated by such number: it has the wonderful property of leaving other numbers untouched when multiplied by! :-D

Please don't say that you gave somebody one... it's too much innuendo.

I'm suspicious of this argument as presented in that link because: 1) The only evidence presented is that from a satire - perhaps "Kill whomever the mob gives the 'thumbs up'" was an irony - doing the exact opposite of the crowds wishes? 2) Thumbs down meaning "drop your weapons" doesn't seem quite right given two gladiators, one badly wounded lying on the ground, the other standing above him brandishing a gladius. A  would, I think, give a clear indication to plunge the sword in, not put it down. Also, given that many gladiators came from the empire and wouldn't have spoken Latin, the signal would have to be clear and unambiguous that weapons were to be put down and not immediately plunged into the victim. 3)The idea that the thumb was bent back, rather than up, doesn't make sense because the thumb would be obscured from view - also, jerking the thumb towards oneself generally means the jerker (or jerk :) ) is referring to himself. 4) This whole confusion was instigated by some French artist who got it wrong? Hmmm. So did the artist misinterpret this himself or was he painting received wisdom? 5) I suspect thumbs up and thumbs down are far more ancient than Rome as signs for good and bad. I also suspect they were in use long after the fall of Rome and long before Gérôme's "mistake".
