So what were you doing 8 years ago ? Must be one of the few occasions one knows exactly what he did on a precise day so far in the past. For me, it begun as a normal internship day. Ended up in front of the TV.

I was just back from the hospital (accident) Just in time to see the second plane hit the tower live. Then stayed to watch the rest (think in total 3 or 4 hours passed by but felt like seconds). I remember thinking it felt like watching a movie (while watching it) but unfortionatly it wasn't.

Ironically, I was writing air traffic control software. A few weeks prior, there was an accident where someone had crashed a Cessna into a building or something like that. So, when I walked down the hall and was told that a plane had crashed into the WTC I made an offhand comment about how drunk college kids shouldn't be allowed to fly airplanes. One of the guys in the warehouse scrounged up a small TV, and we spent much of the afternoon circling by it. My boss was on the road with some FAA business and when we talked to him his comment was, "Yeah, not likely I'll be back to the office today." I recall it being a very surreal experience. It really took several days for the fog of the event to clear, which seemed to be common to all the people I spoke with. We all instantly knew we would be going to war but as it turns out, wars don't work quite like they used to.

I was standing on the trading floor of an American bank in London talking to my pal in New York who sat on the 49th floor of a building from which he could see everything that was going on and relayed much of it to me until he had to leave his building whilst I (along with everyone else on the floor) was watching it unfold on tv. A vile day on which vile people perpetrated cowardly, sickening violence against innocent people.

I was working. The schedule was very tight. I came early in the morning to work. The receptionist told me that a plane crashed on WTC. At first I thought it was something minor and then I saw posts here at CP and the ATL/DCOM mailing lists were I was very active at that time. I did not have a TV at that time so I kept listening to the radio.

I was working (two companies ago). There was no TV there, I heard the news by a mate and couldn't believe. BTW: I'm just realizing how mach time passed since then...

Never work.... Too logical. Why would people want to sensibly order the date components from most significant to least significant? I mean it works for numbers, so it can't possibly be appropriate for dates, right? Wait... I know how to do it! "We should all adopt this new date system... Otherwise the terrorists win!"

I use that format almost exclusively, anytime I'm having to ouput a date. The only other format I sometimes use, is to replace the MM with the short text for the month. The latter ensures that the day and month are not misunderstood, though you can no longer sort the date reliably because of the text. :)

I was at work and walking to the breakroom to get coffee. As I passed by one of our conference rooms, I noticed that there were people in there watching TV; so I went in to see what all the fuss was about. That was a couple of minutes before the second plane hit the WTC. Didn't get much work done that day. Sep 11 is also my wife's birthday. :(

I was at work. One of the guys on my team came around the corner and said he just got off the phone with his girlfriend. She said that it looked like a small plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and that it was all over the news on every channel. Some "small" plane... It wasn't very long before everyone in our building was standing in front of the TV's mounted on the walls through out the place. I remember seeing the cloud from the first tower falling, though we couldn't see the tower itself on CNN, and commenting that it looked like the cloud you get from a building implosion. Everyone was sent home about an hour later...

I remember being at work and hearing a story about the first plane having hit. One person was madly trying to contact his uncle who worked in the second tower. Fortunately we later learned that his uncle was okay and had escaped prior to it being hit. After watching the towers collapse, I just remember this intense and heavy sense of uncertainty. What was the reason for all this? Who could possibly think that they would gain anything from all the suffering and destruction? To this day I still carry some of the uncertainty.

I had been flying home that morning. I landed around 6 am, went home and got a few hours sleep. When I got up I made some breakfast and stuck the TV on. Just in time to see the second plane hit. It made it all the more real having only just got off a plane myself.

At college, oversleeping. I woke about 10:45 for an 11:00 class giving me just enough time to put on clean clothes before running off to my history and philosophy of science lecture. After giving both news and misinformation, eg 8 more hijacked A/C still airborn (WTF was the airforce?!), the prof blathered about how nothing would ever be the same for 20 minutes until classes were officially cancelled much to everyones relief. At 42 stories the building we were in was the tallest in the area outside of downtown Pittsburgh.

                                          The latest nation. Procrastination.
