So what were you doing 8 years ago ? Must be one of the few occasions one knows exactly what he did on a precise day so far in the past. For me, it begun as a normal internship day. Ended up in front of the TV.
No idea really... The only affect it had on us here in South Africa was everyone talking about it. For us, it's the equivalent of "Suicide Bomber destroys Eiffel Tower" - Sure everyone in France will remember it vividly, but it won't directly affect the rest of the world... I'm not trying to be emotionless here, I'm just stating a fact :<

We should all adopt the Japanese style, it is so much more sensible: YYYY/MM/DD HH:MM:SS Just googled it to confirm I wasn't talking b*llocks (my japanese ex-girlfriend told me originally) and it turns out this is also the international standard - ISO8601[^] - how many people actually knew there was one?

But, if you don't trim the right number of milliseconds of the Japanese datetime, isn't it poisonous?

I had just flown home from offshore, still didn't know it had happened, arrived in the house and checked my emails and there was an email from a mate, which basically said, 'wtf is going on with this world, planes flying into buildings!' I thought he was having a wierd moment. Turned on the telly and saw all hell breaking loose. it was a very sureal moment.

I heard about it on the way to work. Ended up in the head of IT's office watching coverage on CNN. At about ten, his boss walked past and told us all to "Get Back to Work." What an asshole. (He later became my boss and confirmed my suspicions. He's still the dumbest functioning person I've ever met and the biggest jerk I ever worked for.)

Ironically, I was writing air traffic control software. A few weeks prior, there was an accident where someone had crashed a Cessna into a building or something like that. So, when I walked down the hall and was told that a plane had crashed into the WTC I made an offhand comment about how drunk college kids shouldn't be allowed to fly airplanes. One of the guys in the warehouse scrounged up a small TV, and we spent much of the afternoon circling by it. My boss was on the road with some FAA business and when we talked to him his comment was, "Yeah, not likely I'll be back to the office today." I recall it being a very surreal experience. It really took several days for the fog of the event to clear, which seemed to be common to all the people I spoke with. We all instantly knew we would be going to war but as it turns out, wars don't work quite like they used to.

I was getting ready to leave for work. Then I switched on TV and watched news on CNN. Then I settled on the sofa for sometime and watched the 2nd plane hitting the second tower. :(( Initially I thought the first plane was accident and but when I watched the second one hit the tower then I realized something was off. After that I went to work, where everybody was talking about the accident (not attack). Around 11 am or so, our boss told everybody to evacuate building. (We were in 11th floor). Our building was designed by same guy who designed the WTC. http://www.believermag.com/issues/200811/?read=article_taylor[^] For few months, I had bad day dreams when I drove past our office. Like I look up the car window, I had visions that plane is hitting for our building.
