Anyone still use the Classic appearance? [modified]
-
With all the Areo and Glass themes that people rush to spend 300 bucks for, and spend thousands more for the hardware to run it, I am curious to know how many people out there still use the Classic theme. I am especially curious to know how many use Classic on Vista or Seven. What theme do you use, and what color scheme? What version of Windows are you running?

XP, with classic settings. Standard colour scheme, except the background colour on the desktop is that greeny-blue colour rather than blue.

Where I'm sitting today (client) - Core 2 Quad 2.4Gig processor, 3 Gig RAM, various HDD's. My office/home computer - 17" widescreen lappy with 4 Gig RAM, some sort of Intel mobile processor (didn't pay that much attention), 160 Gig HDD. External 22" monitor, kbd, mouse.

My laptop has vista, my desktop has XP. I kept the default styles/themes/etc for both. However, I tend to disable things which waste my time (slide-out menus, etc.) whenever I reinstall the OS.
Visual Studio is an excellent GUIIDE.

Same as Chris - classic on XP, Aero on 7 (NO VISTA!).

Come on now.. This is not an Apple! :) Seriously, $50 graphic cards work fine, along with cheap old AMD 64 3800 X2 and 4 GB of RAM. I am on W7, but my dedicated server is running Win2008, but it is in classic mode with Terminal Services.. I miss the shinny things when I have to use it :)

I only use Windows for Workgroups for every day stuff (boot in 1 seconds! :-)) I run Vista in a Virtual Machine if I need it (game, other) Muhahahaha!....

On XP, where the default theme was garish and useless, it made sense to just disable it. On Windows 7, they took the time to make it more than just bad eye candy. I don't even use Classic on the 8-year-old laptop in the corner, as Basic works just fine.

yup, the best for performance, and there are clients that keep using xp because of its performance. I always set the classic appearance on each computer I touch, to help it run faster. Vista sux so why wasting resources u want to keep ready for apps... even the few times I've used vista, I configured it with classic appearance.

I still use the Classic appearance. Running on a Mac with Vista in a VMware Fusion window .. The shiny aero interface is somewhat slow in a fusion window and doesn't really make sense anyhow .. so disabled it and ran with Classic instead.

I believe you can enable all the shininess for Win2008, and when connecting over RDP from Vista and above, it will render all the shinines. I think Aero will even have transparencies if the graphics card on the client supports it.

i have had to revert to the classic theme on vista, because I kept getting a very annoying "atikmdag display driver has stopped responding" error message. this usually led to my machine crashing. this would only occur when using extended desktop. i eventually figured out that if i yank out the second monitor in time, the machine wouldn't crash, but I would have to restart in case I wanted to use the second monitor later on. a couple of my colleagues were experiencing the same issue, and after hundreds of combined google searches and articles read, i came across a suggestion to change my theme from aero to classic. i thought it sounded a little ridiculous, but it was an easy enough fix to try without doing anything to compromise anything on my machine. lo and behold, i have not had a single crash in 4 weeks, where before i would have 3/4 a day. (one of my colleagues also changed to classic theme, and she is in the same boat with no crashes for weeks.)

I run Aero, for the glass effects. My computer can support it on Vista, and I've not noticed any slowdown. It's very nice, and I'm somewhat of a magpie - attracted to shiny stuff.

There might be some discrepancy in exchange rates, but I spent £300 and got Vista Home Premium, with a computer capable of running it. That's nowhere near 'thousands'. I run Vista Ultimate at the moment - the company shipping my computer to me messed up big time, and I got quite a bit of compensation. I spent most of it on an upgrade.

Yapp, on my Toshiba NB200 netbook (Intel Atom 1.66 GHz, 1 Gb RAM, Intel 945 videocard) and on my working machine (Pentium IV 3 GHz, 1.5 Gb RAM, video - Intel 82915G/GV/910GL) I use "Best Performance" settings. On my home machine (AMD Athlon 64 x2 3600+, 3Gb RAM, GeForce 9600 GT) I use Windows 7 with Aero and Mint Linux with Compiz enabled.
