With all the Areo and Glass themes that people rush to spend 300 bucks for, and spend thousands more for the hardware to run it, I am curious to know how many people out there still use the Classic theme. I am especially curious to know how many use Classic on Vista or Seven. What theme do you use, and what color scheme? What version of Windows are you running?

Running windows 7 at home, and vista at the office, both with the nice classic win2k look. (both computers are easily capable of running aero)

I run Aero, for the glass effects. My computer can support it on Vista, and I've not noticed any slowdown. It's very nice, and I'm somewhat of a magpie - attracted to shiny stuff.

There might be some discrepancy in exchange rates, but I spent £300 and got Vista Home Premium, with a computer capable of running it. That's nowhere near 'thousands'. I run Vista Ultimate at the moment - the company shipping my computer to me messed up big time, and I got quite a bit of compensation. I spent most of it on an upgrade.

Yapp, on my Toshiba NB200 netbook (Intel Atom 1.66 GHz, 1 Gb RAM, Intel 945 videocard) and on my working machine (Pentium IV 3 GHz, 1.5 Gb RAM, video - Intel 82915G/GV/910GL) I use "Best Performance" settings. On my home machine (AMD Athlon 64 x2 3600+, 3Gb RAM, GeForce 9600 GT) I use Windows 7 with Aero and Mint Linux with Compiz enabled.

XP, with classic settings. Standard colour scheme, except the background colour on the desktop is that greeny-blue colour rather than blue.

At work XP default. While I won't rush out for "pretty", I hate the drab and dull grey of the pre-XP era. With Vista, Aero enabled and the glass tinged to a slight blue, although I use the classic menu views. Work machine is 2yo now, 4GB RAM, 2.6GHz C2D, yada yada yada, home machine is a MacBook Pro (bootcamped Vista)

I've actually switched to silver at work (with slightly reduced title bar size) to discover theme-related problems earlier. Switched at home too, soon after.

I still use parts of the classic theme. Most of my partners at work converted their machines back to XP in liew of VISTA. Everybody in my shop got new 64 bit computers except me. Why I don't know but it really doesn't matter because my present machine does everything I need. Newer technology is not always the answer. As programmers we face this issue every day. Customers always seem to want the latest gimmick whether it makes sense or not. We have to remember that getting does not mean we are a better programmer/person. It is the person inside of you that makes use of what he has.

I use the MS Royale theme under XP. I ran Classic for years but tried Royale and didn't notice any particular speed decrease so stuck with it. One thing I really don't get under Vista (and probably Weven) is why the close and other title bar buttons are no longer full height. It just makes them harder to hit with a mouse.

I tend to use the shiny themes for 2-4 days after an installation. After that it's back to classic. Why wait literally hundreds of milliseconds for menus to show and views/windows to be updated!? /Jacob

At the moment our mainstream systems are a mixture of XP, Vista, 7, Win2k3 and Win2k8. Of those, the only ones running the "everything is a grey box" theme are the servers (on which the Themes service is disabled by default, so changing it is a bit of a hassle and doesn't seem to work over RDP anyway). I never got the appeal of the so-called "Classic" them. Although Win95/NT4.0 were a huge step forward in usability over Win 3.11, I always thought the default (and only) theme was butt-ugly so I've never had the hankering for it that some have. On the other hand, the default XP theme (Luna) is ghastly too - I very rapidly replaced it with something more aesthetic. Vista and 7 are far better in that regard. All I've done on those machines is change the wallpaper, generally.

On XP & Vista I use the same modified XP Silver Appearance, plain dusky blue green background and more or less the same stuff on the desktop - computer, rubbish bin, documents, development folder, Zstuff (folder of links to stuff I'm currently working on), Zapples (folder of frequently used program links), in task bar there's search and desktop toolbars. Still working on making Win 7 bend to my will. Basically I drive from Desktop Toolbar chevron (that's why they're "Zapples" & "Zstuff"), and System Tray.

I'm on XP and use the visual styles but prefer the classic control panel to categorized and it also took me a while to get used to the personalized start menu but switched to it eventually. I stop the themes service on one of my machines to save RAM and also tend to use classic if I'm stuck with a low resolution display to save screen space.

I still use classic theme as it is more effective to work with in my opinion. Its small, effective, controls look like intended and things are where they should be. I like it plain and simple so I don´t plan using any other theme if I can avoid it :)

Work - Classic theme on XP Home - Aero on Vista Vista Classic doesn't look as nice, XP Classic is easily the best!

Cheers, Vikram. (Cracked not one CCC, but two!)

Windows 7 x64 in classic mode! :) (Core2Duo 2.5 Ghz, 4 GB RAM) Although I have a 24" screen, the Aero taskbar and title bars just take up way too much space imho. I am also using the "classic" taskbar (no grouping, small icons) but I hate the classic start menu, the new one with the search box is superior in every way.

I use Aero in blue. Why? Because it actually runs faster! If you have the graphics hardware to support Aero Windows will use hardware acceleration. If you switch to Classic then it won't user hardware acceleration, so it slows down, even although there is less to do.

Vista as I type - Windows 7 on my other desktop, and Windows Vista on my laptop.
