Last.fm Subscription - or, Would you pay for streaming music?

digitally is cool, my favorite radio. The free offer is so good that I have never understand what I should pay for.
This was quite a long time ago. I sometimes had problems with their free servers being too busy - This may have changed now, whenever I've listened since (although I don't much anymore) they've always been really good. And I liked the higher quality audio.

Well, I've been a Last.fm user for along time now and I'm used to the website. Their service is a bit more advanced in my opinion. Not sure if it's worth the money, anyway.

Last.fm started as a way to find new music by "scrobbling" your playlists to their site. This is done with a WMP plugin and they also support iPod scrobbling. I've discovered a lot of new bands thanks to Last.fm, their recommendations are accurate. As for the paid subscription, you can set the player to play specific artists, tags, recommendations, friends' music and a combination of the above. Most importantly, Last.fm is available in Italy whilst Spotify (or Pandora) is not. :-D

I purchased a 3-month Last.fm[^] subscription for outrageously low price of $9. I find the service pretty good. Sound quality is nothing exceptional but I can't hear any evident distortion/artifact (I've got a "real" HiFi system connected to the PC). The only downside is some short lag or glitch, every once in a while (two or three times a hour). Question: would you pay for a music streaming service? I'd never imagined that I could end up doing that myself.

i wouldn't. but my main reason is that i don't really like having other people choose what i'm going to listen to. i almost never listen to music on the radio, for example. i prefer to choose it myself (or let Shuffle pick from my own library).

That said, $3 a month is a fairly significant amount - I spend less than that on a working week for lunch. I think they should have left it free or make everybody pay - they are discriminating against users not in DE, UK, US. This way, I won't pay a paisa to the bastards.

That said, $3 a month is a fairly significant amount - I spend less than that on a working week for lunch. I think they should have left it free or make everybody pay - they are discriminating against users not in DE, UK, US. This way, I won't pay a paisa to the bastards.

Good for you. I spend €3 (~$4.5) in coffee in two days... luckily it's just a matter of exchange rates.

I second Pandora. I would probably never pay to stream music though, unless I could pick the exact artist/songs I want to play.

I really like GrooveShark[^] and quickly paid for the "VIP" service when it became available ($30/year). Not only music on demand, but it also has a Radio feature which picks similar songs to what you are listening to. I haven't been able to find a song yet that wasn't available to play. With some creative searching you can make some great playlists, like "80s" for a selection of 80's hits. Highly recommend checking out the free service.
