I just came across one at work called PITA. Now, I'm not sure what that stands for, but I'm sure the users know... I'd love to have written that system. Heard any other good system names?
i had a laptop i ended up calling "Godot", because it took Dell a month to ship it to me.

Years ago I worked on a system called SMOC*. It was great to be able to tell people not to mock SMOC. Prior to that I worked on a toolset called AMARTA - the company that owned it had one of these rebranding exercises where a bunch of arty-farty latte swilling goatee-shaggers "brainstormed" and came up with a new symbol for the company and AMARTA that was effectively a blue blob. They called it a biomorphous blob which stimulated ideas and creativity because it could mean anything. We called it an expensive waste of time, but it wasn't long before somebody ran the blob through Photoshop - a quick filter later and the blob was red; thus was born TAMARTA - much to the disgust of senior management. *Symettrical Multivariable Optimising Controller.

I guess the best system name I've actually DONE was FSS It stood for Factory Status System. But, you know, to me it was always ****in' stupid system.

Sounds like it should be called Business On Line Operation Control System.

"What's in a name?" I don't recall any good/odd product names, but I do know that one should never allow a developer to pick a name: On my last job (a taxicab company), the president continually asked we developers to give our systems names that he could promote. Among the many I proposed was "Transportation Information Tracking System". Eventually the president stopped asking.

I once (long, long ago) wrote a map editor for Rise of the Triad[^], called Throttle. The Rise Of The Triad Level Editor It was written in Borland C++ 3.1 with OWL for Windows 3.1. I still have the source code for it, but I highly doubt I could get it to compile, even if I still had the compiler. Although it might be fun to make a Windows 3.1 VM and see if it still works... :cool:

I'm currently working on an Electronic Pick Up / Delivery system, which the client insists on calling EPUD. I'm also working on a management system for our Patriot Advanced Capability missile build system. Again, the client had the last word on naming it .... PACMAN! :)

Back in the day when I was the IT guy, sys admin and DB guru at work we brought up our first MRP system. Like most inventory systems, the cost accountants needed to assign costing methods to inventory items. Naturally there was: FIFO - First In, First Out LIFO - Last In, First Out After a few years we lovingly referred to some items as FISH - First In, Still Here

We've had PIMP, PIGLET, and SWiFT where I work. Yes, they were all acronyms for systems we actually sold. No, I don't remember what they stood for.

I offered up T.... Implementation Tool once. It didn't fly. So sad.

My company (filled with Japanese guys) was soliciting names for a new security service app, and one of the suggestions just slew me: anytime staring system. He made sure we knew the correct acronym by adding it in parentheses after. I so hoped we'd pick that one and start selling our ASS all over Tokyo.
Codemonkeys don't do it at all. Too busy coding.

Around 10 years ago the department I was working for (in a very large company) needed a simplified issue tracking system. They liked the idea of Remedy but didn't have budget to buy it (capex freeze - you've got to love the way companies work) so got me to write it instead. Son Of REmedy Did a logo with a bandaid on it and everything. SORE went into production, doubt it still is though.

I worked on a system call FUTS (Fire Unit Test Set). I was told it's a control system and not a test set so I tried to get it renamed to FUCS (Fire Unit Control System)...they stayed with FUTS. :laugh:
