Google Android phones

I was curious if anyone is using a Google Android based phone and what their opinion is of it? Verizon just announced it was planning to offer phones with Android (unknown when though) and was considering replacing my Windows Mobile based phone.

I have a HTC Hero aka G2 Touch on T-Mobile UK, very good device. I had an iPhone previously and this knocks the socks off it, and is considerably cheaper. I would post more details but I'm off to the gym now, my first visit in 2 years! I'll check back later on this thread.

I have played with the G1 for a while, seemed pretty well designed and I liked the interface. My contract is nearly up and I am looking at getting the HTC Hero next week on a one month trial. Although I might miss the physical keyboard I have now, HTC makes a solid phone in my experience. If it is really bad I will try to let you know. The problem that I noticed on the older android based phones was that they were a little underpowered but hopefully with the new ones coming out having better processors and more ram, that should help it out. The biggest complaint I have is that you can expand your memory via microSD, but you can't run apps on it unless you root the phone. Of course if you pull the card while running an application on it, you risk bricking the whole thing. The unlock 'code' is difficult depending on how complex you make the pattern. A friend of mine made it so you had to go between other points to hit the next location, then frequently took three or four tries to unlock it. You won't have the huge app store that apple has, but really how many word processors and fart simulators do you really need? Though I am sure there will be plenty on android in the future.

Was this rhetorical? ;P I just saw that the Hero was going to be released soon, also Blackberry Storm 2. Decisions, decisions :)

Yea, rather irritating given the limited onboard memory, but there are Android handsets with built in 8GB+ memory. Google claim to be working on it, the main reason being "security" issues apparently, but understandably, like you say, run an app off there, pull it out and you're screwed. Make sure your Hero is running the latest ROM version (separate from Android version), build number 2.73 and above. Very key update if you're evaluating it.

You will, trust me. My old phone is the HTC Wizard but I 'upgraded' to the HTC Touch, I can't tell you how tiresome having to type with a touch screen all the time is. If half the letters on my old HTC Wizard still worked I'd probably still be using that.

I'd like to know as well, when I next upgrade it will probably be the HTC Touch Pro 2 (Sticking with windows mobile) or the HTC Dream (Android) One of the problems I have with all my Windows Mobile based devices is that after a couple of months the whole things just slows right down, and it's never really been that good to begin with.

I'm also interested in this. The HTC Tattoo is due to release later this month and word has it it's going to be significantly cheaper than the Hero. I'm already drooling. :)

Now the next question is, who comes up with these names. Hero, Tatoo, Diamond, Wizard???

I am using Google Nexus One (N1) which runs on Android 2.1-update1. The hardware is well defined. And the OS is also solid. "Android Support Multi Touch" now. Wait for the next update (Android 2.2).
