Some twat in IT has set a policy to force AutomaticUpdate to run on our computers at work. I want to hack the registry to piss this right off. I would rather have a special prostate exam from Bwuce rather than have AutomaticUpdates on my laptop. Now before any of you anal retentive wankers carry on about corporate policy and all, I am IT here at work myself. It has been set for the useless wankers in sales, management and the like. I want it off, what's the magic command?

Are you running XP or Vista? If you are running XP and you have admin privileges why don't you just turn it off in the Control Panel ==> System dialog? I am at home so I don't have access to an XP System but if my memory serves me you need to go to the advanced tab look for a button for windows update. Opt to either inform that updates are available where you can select which updates you want to install or turn automatic updating off. As usual, Vista is another kettle of fish, but it also can be configured. PS - I can give specifics about how to do this in Vista if you need the information. PPS - I know using the dialogs are not a sexy as hacking the registry but they are provided to control the automatic updates. The choice is yours. :~

Thanks for the pointer Henry. Tried that but on reboot the policy pushes itself back. So far all I've been able to do is find all occurences of wuauclt.exe and rename them wuauclt.exe.fuckoff and when XP tries to get me to reinstall the missing files from the CD tell XP to fuck off. This needs to be done everytime I perform a manual WindowsUpdate as it forces wuauclt.exe back into existence.

It's XP Jimmy, suppose that would habe bee a useful bit of information to provide. The dialogs are no good, since it's a domain policy in place it turns it on and greys out the options in the dialog. I'm looking to hack it off cause it pisses me off and I don't need big brother telling what is good for me. I found a real cludgey hack for the time being, see my reply to Henry for the details.

Why don't you just go into Control Panel -> Services and disable the "Windows Update" Service?

Format the drive. If there is some special crap that can only be used on the currently installed OS, use a bootable disk to clone the drive, and then run it in a VM (its possible, I've done it).

Good answer. We have the OS police where I work and they do similar things. :-D

You could try removing all write access to the registry key after setting the values you want - that should prevent the global policy being applied. regedit has a UI for setting registry key permissions.

Java, Basic, who cares - it's all a bunch of tree-hugging hippy cr*p

Why not just have a start-up item of you own always set the values for you, every time you log-in. That way, even if they are reset every time you reboot, you're logging with auto-start-up scripts will set the correct value (assuming they run AFTER the policy scripts--in which case you'll have to find way to to triggered once the policy scripts have done their thing.)
