We were looking at a fiber connection to our office. The city (who is in charge of it) wants 750 a month for 5mbps bidirectional, and 12.5K to install it. The fiber is already laid in the park where our office is located. Seems awfully high to me. What do all of you think? Thanks!

$750 for 5mbps? I pay $60 a month for a 5mbps cable connection with Charter. But that's download speed, I'm sure upload comes nowhere close to that. Maybe because it's a business they expect you to use the full 5mbps and that's why it costs more. My guess is that they charge clients they think can pay the price to upgrade their infrastructure while other smaller clients may pay less. But that's just my conspiracy theory.

For fiber? Sounds like a bit much... Even in NYC, a box of cereal is going to cost, say, six bucks tops. Now, you figure you go through a box a week, or something like that. With a little rounding, we're talking about 25 bucks a month per person. How many people do you have in your office? For 750 a month, you could buy enough cereal for 30 people... Wait a second, we're only talking weekdays here... So a box might last a bit longer than a week... Say 40 people on 750 a month. Granted, I haven't had cereal in a long time (I'm more of a bagel person), so my estimates could be off... As for the 12.5k... That's just silly... I mean you need a refrigerator for the milk, and-- AHH! I forgot about the milk... Ok, that'd raise the price a bit. Maybe if you're having one of those industrial-size fridges put in, it could run you that high... But I think that's overkill for a relatively simple problem. Disclaimer: Yes, I know which "fiber" you mean... This is a pathetic attempt at humor while I stay late at work waiting to be dragged out for a business dinner... Code phrase for "Work really late when not otherwise necessary, but get a free meal out of it"

I am sure you do, but I bet they don't spout ill-informed and ignorant bollocks continually and then get in a hissy-fit if you ever happen to disagree with them. I may add that some of my friends are fat, and yet they are nice people. I have nothing against fat people or morons, it is just that strange central zone in the Venn Diagram of Fat, Moron, Ignorant and Closed-Minded. In fact it is a population of about 3, Gillian, CaptainThicko and Teh Developer (in his new guise).

Um, I get 20MB symetrical fiber here in Buffalo NY for 140 a month, and that includes TV and phone service.

I don't know if it is possible to look as bad as the USA has so far. Two goals against in the first half. -edit- there was some very good attacking in the last few minutes of the half but no scoring.

It not so much the front end costs, but the back end costs.

Dear Brother Dave, This response is in no way related to the context of this exuberant exchange of personal envenomations between you and CSS (or is that a "context-free" szygzy of glossalic dna ?) ... well, whatever it is ... I find this phrase of yours :

Memorable. Very creative ! Reminds me of all the redneck yahoos I grew up with (southern part of the US), folks I believe the English would refer to as "louts." ... mmm ... "stout louts" ? thanks, Bill

Here, in northern Thailand, US $750 could buy you around 1200 liters of fresh-made soy milk. best, Bill

We were looking at a fiber connection to our office. The city (who is in charge of it) wants 750 a month for 5mbps bidirectional, and 12.5K to install it. The fiber is already laid in the park where our office is located. Seems awfully high to me. What do all of you think? Thanks!
