Diwali wishes

Hi Vikram, Yes, indeed, a very happy Diwali or Deepavalli, to all those CP members who are Hindu, Sikh, Jain, or even Nepalese Newar Buddhists, or anyone who celebrates this beautiful holiday (for varied cultural and religious reasons) ! I'll never forget the Diwali of 1975, when I emerged after twenty-three days in Dr. Sachdev's (diplomate in internal medicine, University of Vienna) private clinic in Delhi weighing only 165 pounds, light as a feather (lost thirty-five pounds). I had gone on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Sri Vaishnodevi (the aspect of the Mother Goddess as a young virgin warrior woman who rides a tiger) near Jammu, in Kashmir, wanting to see, with my own eyes, what religious pilgrimage (ratra) was in India first-hand. I was "adopted" at the shrine by two college students on holiday from Delhi who spoke good English. I won't go into the wonderful adventures I had in the course of the hike up into the mountains, the "darshan" at the shrine itself. To say it made a "profound impression" would be an understatement ! But, I fear I may have had "impure" thoughts during the whole three day event, and that, as a result, the Goddess' potent charisma (shakti) sent me back with a strange fever and wasting illness. Or maybe it was something I got from sleeping on the crowded floor of the police station up in the mountains next to a giant Sikh policeman who had the loudest snores I have ever heard in my life. In any case, when I was released from the clinic (they were never really able to diagnose what I had), I came back to my little roof-top apartment (brsati) near the banks of the Yamuna, in the Civil Lines area of Delhi, to find Diwali in full glory ... and it was magical. best, Bill p.s. here in northern Thailand, our very own special "festival of lights," Loy Krathong (or Paveni Yi Peng), happens on the November full moon, marking the end of the rainy season, and the end of the harvest of the major rice crop. Scholars debate the "roots" of this festival, and the extent to which Indic influences, by way of the Khmer, are present in it.
