I wonder which company will get the gig? Berlusconi Bridge Company Ltd perhaps?

On Dec. 23rd, 2010 they'll start building a new bridge between Sicily and mainland, here[^]. It is estimated to cost 6.1 billion Euros, but the official government papers state that figure is vastly underestimated. Also, the bridge will be 3.3 km long and is supposed to be used for cars and trains. They estimated that it will take 70 months to build it. In Japan, they built a similar bridge (started in 1988) but shorter (2km). It took 10 years and 5 billion Euros. It was supposed to allow trains to go on it, but the idea was discarded due to safety issues. Unofficial reports (e.g WWF) state that the Sicily area is not suitable for a bridge like that, as it's frequently hit by earthquakes and there is an active volcano within a few dozen kilometers. Also, there is always a very strong wind which often causes sea conditions unsuitable for navigation. But the most funny thing is that the construction works will start even before the final estimates and projects are completed. They're actually spending money building stuff that won't be used or will have to be removed or changed in a few months. Go figure.

Well but at least it's kind of doable. A 3.3km-long bridge? In a seismic area? Come on.

That already started to happen I guess.

Don't claim to be an expert, but hasn't Japan built some pretty impressive bridges in earthquake zones? They seem to have some experience at it. Of course that's not to say that the Sicilian thing isn't a complete boondoggle engineered primarily to line the pockets of corrupt contractors and politicians.

It's not true. Sometimes they start in Australia[^].
