Well after about a year and half of upheaval and merging with an american company. I managed to keep ducking as they got through something like 13 programmers started or left or both since I started. But now after surviving as only 6 ( network guys have remained relatively unscathed )people remaining of the original 22 and two others within the company being escorted to the door this week alone, the guns have turned on me. I got called into the office for a chat which basically said not to expect a bonus cause I've been off sick for twenty six days in the last year. ( I had a kidney transplant ten years ago and take the kind on drugs that would kill a healthy person but have the effect of lowering my imune system great for the kidney kinda crappy if someone sneezes in the same room ) They then went through all the crimes that I could have possibly commited including a crackdown on time keeping though nothing was said about my time keeping. Inferring that I wasn't actually doing any work on days when I work at home. Got round that one because I'd already agreed with my direct boss that when working at home I have something to write which means I can prove my work. Finally they suggested I work part-time which I suppose means that I will just get ill on the days that I'm not at work. At this point my immeadiate boss started coming to the defence but upper management's attitude seems clear. Ah nuts Anthony www.TonysOpenSource.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

Don't know if you do this in/from the U.K., but in the U.S. someone in your medical situation might be able to sue under one of the Federal anti-discrimination laws.

Certainly not good for a lot of people at the moment, but that sounds pretty bad to me by even the current climate. Hope it works out.

We have laws against discrimination based on genuine sickness, unless you at some point lied about it (either didn't declare it when you started, or if it happened after you started then you didn't tell them about it). My wife is in Human Resources (in the UK) and they have to be VERY careful dealing with people who are blatently lying about their sickness. They have people who have been seen in pubs when they're supposed to be off sick and they still can't do a lot about it without some very solid evidence. Let them push you out on medical grounds, then sue the crap out of them. You don't want to stay there until they find a real reason to get rid of you :-D. Paul

My sympathies, man. I have a relative who received a liver transplant 5-6 years ago, and she has similar problems. I sometimes wish, however, that my company would lay me off. If I got the standard severance package, I'd walk out with a half year of pay. I bet I could get at least a minimal programming job in a week or two, or something good within a couple of months. I've never hidden it if anyone asks I always tell. I'm quite proud of the fact I got through it to be honest and if I have to see a doctor for any reason I always ask for a sick note even if I am not legally required too. I suspect that they wont push me out on medical grounds but put me on part time or some crappy job so I'll leave Anthony www.TonysOpenSource.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

Cheers m8 The really stupid thing is I have so many things I'm trying to do at the moment what with developing my own stuff and studying that if it didn't involve less pay I'd jump at the chance to do it As for another job the stories coming out of the agencies at the moment are if you send in a c.v. they'll get round to looking at it in 3-6 months Anthony www.TonysOpenSource.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk
