It always annoys me when our European colleagues visit and bitch about the coffee. Yeah, we get it, your coffee's better. Now STFU.

The coffee in our cafeteria actually isn't bad, other than the fact it isn't nearly strong enough for my taste.

We have a European engineer visiting us. I just walked through the lab, and he brought an espresso machine with him. I don't know whether to be insulted or to beg a cup.

Where is he from? Europe, you know, is big and there are many States.

Beg a cup and make a friend. I bet he'd be delighted to make one for you and at the very least it will give you a new experience and something to compare to your cafeteria coffee. When I used to drink espresso we used to take an espresso maker camping with us.

Not everyone in Europe is in this mood: The spaniards, italians and portuguese love strong coffee. The french and germans have it a little bit more softer. The northern countries drink coffee all day... of course it is really soft... We have bought an horrible coffee machine in order to be able to offer the kind of coffee the Denmark people likes when they come to our company... And the last time I came to the USA... well the coffee was as I had been warned... ;P It is curious how in different countries something as basic as the coffee (the drink that helps all the programmers in the world) changes... PS: Beg a cup... this is the best option... PS2: Be sure that when he leaves he believes that the espresso machine is broken so you could keep it...

Our parent company is mostly Italian property so in our cafeteria we have a huge industrial espresso machine. The American guys get used with the espresso and now the machine for the caffeine syrup which Americans called coffee is covered with a thick layer of dust.

Earlier this year I was half way up a Welsh mountainside taking shelter from the driving rain under the hideous looking overhang that was to be the next pitch of our climb and my climbing partner pulled one of these out of his bag. I'd never even believed that such a thing existed. http://www.handpresso.com/[^] Legend

I don't know if the quality of the final brew is different but he had the version that takes little packs of coffee rather than ground coffee. The stuff tasted awesome at the time, but that may have been because I was shaking due to a combination of adrenalin and cold and any cup of coffee that was above average strength and decently hot would have tasted good

Where abouts were you climbing?  At a rough stab in the dark probably Snowdonia somewhere if it was climbing on a mountainside.  Might be completely wrong though...
