Weven Laptop
-
Just spent the afternoon setting up a new Laptop for a new starter. W7Pro is simple enough to follow, (no outlook? had to use Windows Live for an email for him, but no probs). Getting onto works wifi - Check McAfee Security Setup - Yuk, but Check Putting Office 2k7 on - Check Install and test mobile dongle - Check Getting rid of IE8 and replacing with FF - Check Connecting to LAN and Sharing - NOT CHECK! I had to reset the machine to be recognised as a HOME network, not the WORK settings. There seems to be security issue that w7 will not let you file share on Work settings, but change it to Home and file sharing is ok. What is that about? Anyway, switched to home and... - Check! Set up a few options that I like and present it to him. He seems happy. I wonder how long before he comes back with questions?

IIRC, the Win FW autodisables file sharing and network discovery and so on under mostly anything but the "home" setting, but you can manually override it by setting rules in the FW (or disabling it...). The Weven FW doesn't seem nearly as shitty as previous iterations either.

Sharing what? Are you sharing the laptop's drive? For most work situations, a workstation connects to shares on the network (from a file server) - it doesn't make them available on the network.

Just click "Yes" or "OK" to any popup window that you see. Don't worry about the stream of curses coming from the other room, that's just Dave's delayed reaction to coffee kicking in.

That is not funny, I am still keeping a close eye on him. No, the new guy seems to know enough not to be dangerous.

No but perhaps I should - (evil laugh ensues...)

Depending on your viewpoint, he could also know just enough to be particularly dangerous. But that might just be me being cynical :)

Nope. The ones that knew enough to get along on their own tend to have the most catastrophic and horrific stories attached. "Well, I repartitioned the drive, put a flavor of Linux I like, got it set to boot into Windows along with Linux and Mac OS, installed all the apps along with the drivers and such for everything I need. But I think I might have horked up something because trying to get to Windows gives me BSoD and now Ubuntu is giving me all sorts of fits. OSX is locking up randomly too..." We solved the entire thing very easily. Wiped it, put OSX back on and put a note telling him if he broke the computer use agreement with us again he was getting an Etch-a-Sketch. The smart ones never need help on the easy stuff. But when they need help, you know you are in trouble.

I too had issues with Weven and networking. They've dumbed it down to the point I can't get it to work any more. I finally gave up because it's in a virtual machine and I really only needed to test some software on it but yeah..yuck!
