Hi all, It's looking very likely that my company will be sending me to the good ol US of A in about five months to work with a customer located close to Baltimore. The duration of my stay will likely be at least 18 months. Now, I won't be staying in Baltimore. Some other guys from work are already there, and they live out from it a ways. Now I've got a couple of questions. 1) Seeing as work is paying for accomodation I dont have to worry about that, but I am interested in what the costs of living are like there. Specifically, how much is Cable TV and broadband internet? ;P 2) Is there much to see and do in that region of the US? I've been to Washington and N.Y. on holidays before, so I'm sure I'll head to DC and check out (more) of the Smithsonian and other things like that; is there much more? 3) Any CPians live in that area?

Baltimore itself (other than the inner harbor) is a pit. Figure about $200 a month for food if you mostly eat at home. A lease on a car will cost about $300 - $400 a month with $2000, $3000 due at signing. You could also plan on getting a used car for about $3000 - $4000 and sell it when you go back. Car insurance should run about $750 a year. Make sure your employer pays for the medical insurance, its quite high in the US. Londo wrote: 2) Is there much to see and do in that region of the US? You will be within easy driving distance of Washington DC and Philadelphia, both which have a great night life. A further out there is New York, Boston, and Atlanta. There is also good fishing, and sailing along most of the atlantic. Londo wrote: 3) Any CPians live in that area? Sorry, I'm from North NJ, about 5 hours away by car. The main thing you need to worry about is getting your own car. Public transport in the US is rather limited. You are going to have to drive to get almost anywhere in the US.

One bit of adviced, if you are in the DC area watch out for someone carring a 223 rifle, or more specifically cover your head or chest areas. Unfortunately there is a crazy-sniper running around. -:suss:Matt Newman / Windows XP Activist:suss: -Sonork ID: 100.11179

I should have said that the company will lease a car for me, and pay for medical insurance. Even if they dont pay for petrol, it's quite a lot cheaper in the US. Stuart van Weele wrote: Oh my, yes. AFAIK the "crazy" sniper is only going after women and children. I think that he has only shot one man. I think the sad thing is that this guy is doing it all for attention and that is exactly what the media is giving him. Now that guy is starting to leave notes around the crime scene to tease the police. I am just as curious as everyone else, but I wonder what would happen if this guy did not appear on the news, I wonder what he would do then?

It kind of is an efficient form of terrorism, flying a plane into 210 story towers just scares people away from planes, sniping people at gas stations just seems to make Americans nervous, but they don't stop getting fuel. You could also plan on getting a used car for about $3000 - $4000 and sell it when you go back. Car insurance should run about $750 a year. Make sure your employer pays for the medical insurance, its quite high in the US. I should have said that the company will lease a car for me, and pay for medical insurance. Even if they dont pay for petrol, it's quite a lot cheaper in the US. Stuart van Weele wrote: Oh my, yes.

I have comcast and for basic cable and internet access it's about $80 US. Londo wrote: 2) Is there much to see and do in that region of the US? As for what to do in and around Baltimore, check out the Baltimore City Paper and Baltimore Sun. As for the DC area check out the Washington Post. This provides the big picture about the two cities... :-D

Baltimore itself (other than the inner harbor) is a pit. The main thing you need to worry about is getting your own car. Public transport in the US is rather limited. You are going to have to drive to get almost anywhere in the US.

I live about 30 minutes west of DC, 1:30 from Baltimore. I lived near Baltimore for 5 years before moving to my current location. There is much to see and do within a 4 or 5 hour drive of Baltimore. Much U.S. history, such as Williamsburg, VA and Gettysburg, PA. There are many nightclubs in the Georgetown area of DC. You can sail, boat, fish, and visit beaches (Hilton Head, SC is nice). You can put your car on a train and travel to Florida overnight, see Disney World, etc. As I said, much to do.
