All of them are AMERICAN films. He did state ENGLISH.

Superb film, but fails the English Test. Have you seen Inglorious Basterds yet? That is excellent.

That was a Looney Toons Bugs Bunny Cartoon, and would therefore be American! :)

At the risk of sending Dave off the deep-end my vote goes for Local Hero (Scottish director, most of the cast, location). For purely English I'd say Heavens Above, The Ladykillers (original NOT the Tom Hanks travesty), Lawrence of Arabia or The Life of Brian. Andy B

A walk to remember is an excellent movie. Now, picking ONE favourite to rule them all isn't difficult to me, it is bloody impossible. But one of my favourites, in line with what seems to be the collective taste in here, is The Shawshank Redemption. Also Tim Robbins best movie evvah. //L [EDIT] Overlloked the "english" bit in the original query. My answer still stands, though, with the addition of "The Match"[^] from 1999 as Honourable Mention :) [/EDIT]

Does Restless Natives count? My Fav film but it could be classed as Scotish not English!
Go away and research the subject, analyze the options for and against, understand the problem and them come back when you agree with me.

How would you defend that as an English film? American again!

Does The Lord Of The Rings count? I just took a quick look through my collection and it's not that there aren't many English movies, it's that nearly all of the Englich movies I have are James Bond. Anyway, I'll go with Love Actually.

[rant] Why has everyone above me picked movies that are not English? There have been some great English movies, Passport to Pimlico, The 39 Steps, Four Weddings and a Funeral etc. It seems most people seem to confuse English and American. One person even picked American Beauty! FFS People It is an AMERICAN FILM!!!! The Clue is in the name! My Fave English Film, (ie Made in England, Using a predominantly English Cast and Crew and English Effects people etc), must surely be the Original Star Wars films, or possibly the James Bond series, although Snatch was excellent. DD, if the OP really meant an English movie and not an English Language movie then why did he pick "A walk to remember" as his favourite? Is it just me or is that not an American movie, shot in America and acted by Americans? Unless its a different movie of the same title he's referring to.

Ok, it has got Irene Handl in it (She who was the Gran in Metal Mickey), but otherwise, NOT an English film.

I though you meant films using the English language (as oppose to films in Spanish, Italian, Hindi...etc)

Inglorious basterds is my new number 1 at the moment - it just seems to have it all: comedy, suspense, intriguing dialog, gore, and more. Not exactly your average family movie, very graphic in parts as you'd expect from Q.T.
