Bought a new toy last night: HP dv7-3065dx Entertainment Notebook:

    • AMD Turion II 2.4 ghz
    • 4 gb DDR2 ram
    • 500 gb 7200 RPM hard drive
    • 17.3" screen (1600x900 / 900p)
    • Blu-Ray ROM/DVD +- RW

The HP Media Smart software isn't as nice for watching movies as my Acer's Arcade Deluxe (both from CyberLink), but isn't too bad. And the picture quality is excellent, especially for watching Blu-Ray. =) The built-in speakers are much nicer than my Acer Aspire 7720, though to be fair the Aspire 7720 models were plagued by faulty speakers. The laptop is a fingerprint magnet with a shiny chrome touchpad and glossy surfaces, similar to most laptops these days. I keep a microfiber cloth in my laptop bag for wiping it down, heh. It's not quite the laptop Mrs. Flynn and I were shooting for, but the price ($729.99) and the capabilities were worth the "sacrifice". The weakest component is the video card (ATi shared memory), but since we usually only play SimCity and Sims games (with the occasional older Need for Speed game), we decided we could live with it. =) Flynn

I looked at HPs a few weeks ago, but the shiny touchpad didn't work for me. I guess my fingers were sweaty in the store (or there had been too many grubby fingers on it before mine!), but when I tried the touchpad my finger didn't glide - it stuck... I walked over and bought a Vaio with a nice slidy plastic touchpad instead. You're right though, the Blu-Ray is nice! Enjoy your toy.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the shiney trackpad, but I generally have a mouse hooked up to mine, so no need to deal with it except for one-off situations. :) My previous laptop (Acer Aspire 7220) has Blu as well, so I built up a small collection of movies over the past couple of years. Mrs. Flynn was ambivelent about Blu-Ray, but it was an important feature for me. Flynn

We were fine when it was just one dollar, but then on our plan (6 discs at a time) they jacked the rate up another $6 for adding Blu-Ray. So, I just buy the odd movie here and there. :) Flynn
