Do Scandinavians understand English?
-
We have a product that is translated into German and English. No we want to directly address the English version to other countries by advertising on Google AdWords and Facebook Ads. What was rather successful was to adverties the English version of our program to Dutch and Belgium people since most of them know English very well. I searched for a list of other countries [^] but found nothing usable. Question: Which countries would be able to use an English product while English is not their native/original language? Thanks Uwe

India. In fact, an English product would sell more than the product in all the other 20-odd national languages combined. I've never seen an OS here that's not in English. (Yeah, I know MS makes Hindi Windows, but I'd be interested to see how many copies have been sold.)
Cheers, Vikram. (Cracked not one CCC, but two!)

I trust the Belgian number is an average of two numbers, a high number for the Dutch speaking North, and a lower number for the French (and some German) speaking South. :)

Yes, but no self-respecting Belgian will admit to speaking English. :-D

In general, yes. I'd say that the average grown up Swede, Norwegian or Danish will understand most things you can come up with in English. We study English in school from first grade and never dub movies and such, only subtitling here. Not sure about Finnish people, though...

Thank you! Would you find an English software UI too offensive? ("The vendor seems to be too lazy to translate - will not buy!"). Cheers Uwe

Since the question is written in english, there wont be that many scandinavians able to answer "no". But yes... Most of us speak english fairly well.

We're not religious in that sense, like some other European countries. For enterprise users, English applications are definitely no problem. For home users, their age might affect their perception of the app. The computer-aged users will obviously find English apps more natural. But, since most content on the web is in English, I don't really see a problem there either. What application area do you target?

There's a difference in understanding English well and speaking English well... ;)

Thanks for your feedback! I am thinking of the two applications at the bottom signature of my posting here. One is an enterprise application (the test tool), the other is a consumer application (what they would call a "homepage generator"). Cheers Uwe

It is very hard to keep a Danish GUI in Windows. There is, of course, a Danish version of Windows, and Danish versions of most major software packages, but you are bound to end up with 2-3 programs that you cant find in a Danish version, so trying to get a Danish interface will usually mean a mixed interface. For that reason I prefer installing an english version of Windows, and prefer an english GUI iin the programs i run. I think most of my friends do the same. Since your program seems to be targetting the nerdy part of the population, i think many of them will prefer an english GUI too.

I've traveled several times to DK and they understand english better than me... (this is not really hard though). It seems that they are not translating Hollywood films into their language... they are having the films subtitled and in that way they help the population to understand english better...
