What is the best font for programming?

dunno. but it reminds me of a thread some guy had started about the best font for resumes, in which some applicant said 'dingbats' - adding that if they can't take the time to decipher it they can't be that bothered about u (he was joking, obviously)

I'm a massive fan of the font Envy Code R font. Personally I really think it does make you a better programmer by quickly telling similar characters apart like O and 0 and { and (. It comes with bold and italic versions so you can highlight keywords, strings, comments etc too. Same here. The UI for Expression Blend infuriates me. It's designed for twenty-something Starbuck-sucking artiste designers, instead of old working fucks like me who need to do a job and can't read the gray-on-gray screen.

I've yet to see a font that beats Bitstream Vera Sans Mono. And for Visual Studio settings, I use 2008-DarkGrey. But this is pretty much a matter of personal preference...

I once spent hours trying debug code that had a typo where a upper case "O" was replaced with a zero "0". I would say in this case the right font would have made it obvious.

I personally use 9pt Fixedsys — failing that, 11pt Courier New. Fixed-width font is <3. :)

May I suggest your reply also displays some ignorance? It is well known, for instance, that serifed fonts have about a 7% better uptake in understanding than san serif. Font choice is probably very personal - but it is also possible that one font will relax the eyes more. The retinal nerve uses an appreciable fraction of the brain's 10 watts power, so maybe the right choice of font will allow longer work periods.
