Right, this is driving me nuts. Every time I start Outlook, I'm having to click cancel on the blasted windows installer about 1000 times. Everything works apart from this annoying thing. Does anyone know how to disable the damn thing? I've found a DisableMSI setting which I've tried setting to 2 to no avail, unless it needs a reboot to be active (can't reboot currently as I have a ton of things running I can't interrupt).

Happens on one of the computers at my work. Perhaps try inserting your Office CD (DVD?) and let the installation finish whatever it is trying to install.

Visual Studio is an excellent GUIIDE.

It doesn't seem to even look at the CD, or ask for any installation media. It just gets to the end, then repeats over and over if I don't cancel it (many many times). Curious thing is, I just started up outlook again now to describe more accurately what's going on here, and I'm getting different behavior this time. Now it's coming up with "Windows Installer" in the title bar and "Preparing to install" inside the dialog for approximately 1 second, then an email appears in my inbox, then it appears again for a second and the next email appears and so on. As I'm trying to collect mail from an account with a big backlog of mail on it this is second delay per message is slowing down the collection - but at least it doesn't seem to be requiring me to click cancel every time at the moment. Well, looks like this will be running for some time until all these messages have been received. Time for a drink.

Not exactly. Got back and windows installer had gone, and Outlook was stuck on a white screen. Waited several minutes before giving up and terminating it. Started it back up and it's downloaded some, but not all of the mail (I suspect maybe 10% of it but not really sure). It's now doing the repeated "Preparing to install" thing again, so I guess there'll be a few more rounds of this....

I had something similar, turned out to be a clash of versions, I had installed the home version and the the standard version, office was terribly confused. This was fixed when I rebuilt the machine and only installed the standard version.

We had this happen a while back with our app and the installer. It had something to do with the desktop icon being copied and modified. In any case we ditched windows installer in favor of InnoSetup and have never looked back. It's some kind of protection thing to save you from yourself. When you launch it something is changed manually outside the installer and so it runs setup again.

Pop in the install disc, then open all Office products (even the ones you never use) one at a time, and let it do its installery-pokery. One of them will be the cause of the problem. When it's installed the whatever-file-is-missing for that one, the others will stop asking for the install disc. My money's on FrontPage.
