Oh wow... I never realized the "dole queue" was an actual thing for you Brits... I just looked it up, because of this quote lodged in my memory: "With a degree in maths and another in astrophysics, it was either this or back to the dole queue on Monday" -- Trillian, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Primary Phase (BBC radio) I never understood that quote until now :P

Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in? Author of Guardians of Xen (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel)

I was on it once, many years ago just after I left the army, it is not a nice place to be, but after a month I got a job and have worked ever since. There are many on it at the moment. It forces talented people to do awful, demening tasks, like JSOP writing VB. (Mind you I do a lot of VB, but not as a profession, thankfully, merely as an aside to main main tasks).

What is it with Egypt this year? Several people from my office have been there and to Cyprus this year. Must be the HOT destinations or something.

Hot, Cheap and All Inclusive! Two weeks, Xmas and New Year, all I can eat and drink £800 each, and guaranteed Sun and 28-30 degrees. Beats Luton in the cold and wet!

Probably there is a slightly difference in the prices between the two destinations :) My wife’s sister used to spend her vacations in Egypt for the last 5 years and apart from some exotic stomach viruses, she told us that everything else is ok.

Oh yes, many, many times. Once, many years ago and in a different career Luton was part of the area that I worked. Will, sadly, be coming next August when I have to use the airport. Note for the sake of balance I did once live in Milton Keynes.

17 Days before I go on holiday and my boss has informed me that there will be no Xmas Bonus. Glumness Descends as I was counting on this for my Spending Dosh. :( Then, 2 seconds later, he says that this only counts for everyone else in the company, but that I, he and one other will be getting the bonus because of successes achieved earlier in the year, but that we are to keep our mouths firmly clamped shut about it! Woo Hoo! It does mean I will have to fork out for the Elves to have a drink, but I don't care about that, I can give them a meal and a drink for less than £100, and still enjoy my holiday. I just gotta hope my request for a pay rise goes through too. (I won't be holding my breath on this being a good rise). So, Egypt here I come!

Have they fixed their garbage problem yet? In a bout of idocy some months back their govt exterminated all the swine that disposed of their organic trash with the result that it was piling up on the street, rotting, and being even more revolting than normal. X|

in DD's case it's something that those who suck up to the boss are rewarded with. In my case it's a $15 gift card to the local grocery store (theoretically to buy a ham/turkey for dinner with).

Cape Town can give you that, but with probably worse traffic if you stick around the trendy areas, and maybe worse traffic if you opt for the cultural niches, and a chance of worse traffic if you shoose nearby country destinations like the winelands. But, if you opt for the more esoteric route of a psychedelic trance party somewhere between the mountains and winelands, you will be surprised to encounter ... just as much traffic. BTW, the Killers are playing in Franchshoek in about a week or two, and they are begging people to help reduce the traffic. This is far from CT.
