Hello! I have some sort of dilema this week. I currently work at some company here and I don't really enjoy the work I'm doing, and the pay isn't good. I'm getting an interview this week to work in a game editor (a new one) as a developer and I have pretty good chances to get the job. I'd probably like the kind of work (since I worked in a software company for almost 2 years previously) that I'd do over there and the pay would be much better (at least not worst!) You're probably wondering why the choice isn't obvious for me! ;) Well, I'm working on a personal project (I have a small company) that has a huge potential. Right now, my job isn't perfect, but at least it's not very demanding and I don't have to do any over-time so I still have some time to work on my own stuff. Now this other job, is your typical software/gaming company: short cycles, lots of over-time so less time for me to work on my stuff. I guess I have to take a chance... If my project turn out good, I can leave my current job and finally run my business full-time. But if I fail, I'll be stuck for a while here. OTOH, if I take this cool job, I may not have time to finish my work and end up missing a big opportunity. I'd still have a cool job though :) so I wouldn't lose that much... If you're going to commit yourself to working all the hours in a day, make sure the pay really is good. You'll get drained and depressed if you're overworked and underpaid, and life is too short. At the end of the day, we work to make money to pay to a) live and b) enjoy ourselves. If you can't do that, then what's the point?! Signature space for rent. Apply by email to....

To do that determine how much time is nessassery to finish the code. Take the new job a week or two after the conclusion of the first job. Then you can have the time to finsih your prodcut, and get the new job.

...this is quite a predicament. I believe that you should look at the possible potential of the company and you possiblepotential at the well paying job. When one weighs over the other one take it. Think of loss or gain of time depending on how you look at it, go i gain time with my family. Lose it? Will i have enough time for my own projects? All those things must be answered before you should cohse one over the other. Personally i would chose the well paying job, i find time for myself, although quite hard it would be. :-D

You need to walk a tightrope. It's both important to pursue your own dreams and at the same time make sure to put food on the table, so to speak. Plan A to pursue your dreams, and plan B for the food and bills. :) But be very very careful. Do not, repeat do not let your plan B usurp your true goals. If you let it, it will - mark my words. And one more thing. Never ever tell yourself, "Oh I'll start working on my dreams as soon as I save some more money kissing my boss' ass. Or as soon as I get married. Or as soon as my kids get a little older. Or <>." No pal, start working on your dreams and goals right now. Don't put it off. If you need to kiss your boss' ass to pay the bills, by all means go ahead and kiss his ass, but keep working on your goals at the same time. In short, don't put your backup plan first. Do not make it your first priority. It is the most common mistake people make in the world.
