I'm on the lookout for one or two developer/computer magazines to subscribe to in my company. Which magazines do you prefer? I used to buy Byte magazine, but they are out of business (as a paper magazibe anyway). MSJ is also pretty cool. But the articles are free on the web, so I won't buy that one. Hello, I'm subscribed to two magazines, MSDN (successor to MSJ) and Windows Developer's Journal. I think both are great. MSDN always talks about new technologys and things coming up, while WDJ provides good tips on how to use already existent tools. I would recommend you to subscribe to MSDN because, although you can find its content on the web, you get the printed magazine before (I've had June issue since for about 5 o 6 days), and I rather have a printed copy that you can take anywhere, than read from the screen sitting at your desk. I subscribe to DDJ, Windows Dev Journal, and C/C++ Users Journal. I find that they each taylor for a different market. So it depends on what you're looking for:
- DDJ - The granddady of them all is very well rounded, discussing multiple OSes and languages. If you do cross platform and cross language development, it will be much more valuable than the others. Highly Recommended.
- WDJ - A very slim and focused magazine. If your company concentrates mainly on Windows dev, you should probably have it laying around, otherwise, skip it. (As not to sound too critical, I'd like to rebut by saying that I really enjoy this magazine and have written a couple articles for it).
- CUJ - As it's name implies, it's for us C/C++ junkies. It's a very good source if you want to stay up to date with the standards and the C++ market. Might even be good reading for Java programmers.

I couldn't agree more - I only buy DDJ if it covers something I need, because I only use C++, but the other two are insidpensable and more than compensate for the loss of MSJ and VCDJ to the dark side ( C# coverage only, especially in VCDJ ). Christian I've learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in. The early bird may get the worm, but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese.

I would not go with VCDJ. They just got absorbed into VBPJ and the current issue only has 2 articles on C++ while the rest of the magazine is on VB. I'm even considering cancelling my subscription to it and looking for a more devoted magazine. Justin Turney

Is *that* why the VCDJ site doesn't show a screenshot anymore ? How cunning.... They sold their soul to C# a long time ago anyhow - just after my subscription started. They are also collosally stupid. I wrote to them three or four times during my subscription to let them know I was getting two copies of each issue, an issue which they never fixed ( to their loss ). Funny thing is, I couldn't even GIVE the things away when I had two - just nothing of interest to C++ developers anymore. I reckon they got absorbed because they were writing for the same users - in the end all the code in their mag was destined to run on a CLR and therefore of more interest to VB developers than myself. My first choice - always - is Software Development. It is a sort of "multi-cultural" PC software magazine that covers technical and non-technical issues that can impact a development project. In the last few years, they have lost a few of the authors I really liked - but it is still a good choice. Another good choice is Embedded Systems Programming. After CUJ, this is suprisingly one of the better C++ programming magazines available. It also has Dan Saks writing a regular column - which is worth the subscription price alone. For Microsoft platform info (and by far the leading .NET printed publication) MSDN magazine looks to be the leader. Dale Thompson

I used to be a subscriber to the C/C++ User's journal, but they seem to have really gone off the boil in recent years. :(( JOOP and C++ Report were my faves (from the same publishers), but they both went out of business (admittedly, they were realtively esoteric [which means that they used to publish articles about things which might not have occurred to me ;) before, and not another half baked 'I've got a better Windows wrapper than MFC/WTL, and it is nearly sort of kind of cross platform but not quite feature complete, and not quite working']...but you could actually learn from them). I let my subscription to CUJ lapse last month; however, this is a time of flux for that stable, and they may pick up again. I hope so, because I don't know of a decent developer's magazine that's left. MSDN Magazine & WSJ are useful for keeping up with MS if you insist on having things in print.
