New monitor [modified]

LG makes some nice ones... I'm using this one at home: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+23%22+Widescreen+Flat-Panel+LCD+HD+Monitor+-+Glossy+Black/9274607.p?id=1218072894682&skuId=9274607[^] So far it's been great, though the vertical viewing angle is a little narrow.
Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in? Author of Guardians of Xen (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel)
My LG 42" LCD TV at home is awesome, if the same quality applies to their monitors then I'd get one.

Unless that extra inch is of vital importance(...sigh...) my money would without a shadow of a doubt be on the Samsung. High quality products and above average support. //L

Been shopping around for a new monitor for my home machine, around about the £150. I don't know an aweful lot when it comes to hardware, so as usual, I'll ask the good people of CP! These 2 inparticular caught my eye: Acer 24"[^] Samsung 23"[^] Feel free to slap me down on those I've noticed and point me elsewhere :) Cheers!

I'll continue to advocate buying *VA or IPS panels over TN unless your budget is extremely tight. TN are only 6bit internally so all their colors are done via dithering as well as having much more severe shifting of color/gamma levels as you move your head away from a direct view at the screen. Your eyes will thank you.

The only visual problem I have with my SAMSUNG (seems to be the 24" variant of yours...) is the backlight shining through a bit, so full blakc is a bit uneven. However, it's not more than with comparable monitors, and other than that it's quite excellent.
Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

Price seemed very reasonable, with Samsung you tend to know what you're getting, 3 years warrenty too! What's also impressive is from when I hit "buy", I'd received a dispatch email within 15 minutes, I've never been able to fault Dabs on service :)

Acer :-) I have a 24" acer at home and love it. The reason why i went for my acer is because the borders are small compared to other monitors as you can see in your two examples. I have a 24" BenQ at work also, really good screen, same thing though... small border :)

I did like the thinner borders on the Acer though! How's your build coming? I'm ordering the components, most anyway, for mine tonight. Somewhere in the region of the following: Phenom II X4 @ 3.4GHz Black Edition (£140) 1TB WD @ 10,000 RPM (£65) 6 GB Corsair DDR3 (£108) Can't quite recall the graphics card, think it was a Radeon 4870? Half a gig, but fast GPU if I recall. About £100 it was. PSU, DVD drive and other boring bits :) All inside this pretty thing![^] I love blue LEDS

You might consider what kind of base the monitors have as a tie breaker. The stands for my Samsung monitors adjust all over the place, while my LGs are pretty much a monitor on a stick. Quality otherwise seems to be the same. I've 5 LG and 4 Samsung monitors. Of the lot, one LG has died and one Samsung is dying.

That's really awesome!!! Enjoy it! It's quite a bit faster than mine. To give you an idea, I installed VS2008 FULL in 17 minutes, and SQL 2008 FULL in 13 minutes :D

The post-CRT monitors seem to fail pretty frequently, in my experience. I've used Acers, Samsungs, and something labeled as a Dell. The 15" square Samsungs in particular seem to have a habit of quitely going dark after a couple of years. I think part of the problem is that the overall unit is simply lighter than the CRT was, and thus fares comparatively poorly in any collisions. The 15" models obviously suffer even more from this problem.
