I am cleaning up came across a couple SATA HD's we have removed for one reason or another. Before tossing them, I plugged them in and see that the BIOS recognizes that there is something installed, but is unable to recognize the HD. I have downloaded the vendor test software & it was unable to recognise the HD's either. But since I am cheap and hate to throw stuff away, I thought I would ask the accumulated knowledge if they have seen and solved this behavior before? If so, I would love to try your solution! Thanks

I just got through having a little SATA fun last week. If you're on XP (you'll have to translate for other OS versions), right click on My Computer, select Manage, and then select Disk Management from the tree view at left. With any luck, you'll see Disk 0 through whatever your normal drives are, and then the errant hard drive showing up at the end of the list. You may need to "import" (I think that's what it was) the "foreign drive." On the right hand area with all the diagonal lines, name of the drive, etc., right click. You should see some options along these lines in the context menu. I was having a problem with an external 1tb USB drive not showing up or getting a drive letter assigned. Once I imported it, it was recognized, got a drive letter and was generally happy. Hope this gets you going down a useful path -

Bummer! Well, you could always invite JSOP over and you guys could have some fun using them for target practice. I've always wanted to do that. :)

Open the drive and take the magnets out. They are made of rare earth elements and are very strong. Good for use on your frig door. The platters can be used as mirrors.

As a last resort: Try baking it in the oven at 275 deg F for 10 minutes*. I have heard this works for high end graphics cards that start failing due to micro-fractures in the soldering. Might work for a hard disk too. Let me know the outcome. * Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for anything. I do not know if it is safe to bake electronics. Google for experiences/tips.
