With the added bonus - if you have to use the toilet whilst on site you can work out how much they paid you to use it :) A friend of mine I used to work with when I was contracting many moons ago, created a turd calculator :)

I wish I could tell you that the Monopoly guy fought the good fight and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that. But prison is no fairy-tale world

If you're armed with a reasonable skillset and a broad understanding of the technology, the STARTING rate would be around 450 a day. While it is tempting to go down this road it is also a road of certain dangers. Like being surefire to be the first let go if a project stalls, fails or discontinues, like the monumental amount of paperwork involved, tax calculations, VAT returns, and the list goes on. What's worse is that you never take vaccation due to thinking "Hmmm, I make 500 pounds a day. If I go away for a week that will cost me 2500 pounds in lost income alone...". I should know, I am on that road. Sometimes I miss being an employee. //L

Where's that then: utopia? That might hold true with a decent skill set and a few years of experience in a financial institution in the City but you'll not get anything like that if you live in Doncaster and have a third in media studies. Read this: Contracting for Dummies[^] and the asscoiated articles: they may give you some pointers.

No offence intended in my previous statement. I am basing this on my own experience as I am currently working as a contractor. Fair enough, I work in Dublin, but I expect London to be about the same. With the current state of things I wouldn't even interview for a position paying less than 450 a day. Over here it's obviously Euros, but it seems that salary and expense wise 1 Euro == 1 Pound. //L

I would have thought London pay might be a bit higher but, again, that is dependent upon a number of factors. Someone going into their first contract is unlikely to achieve those rates without many years of experience in a related role behind them. If you go to many of the websites you will see roles advertised at much lower rates (and some much higher).

Hey guys Does anybody have any idea what the going rate for a freelance application/database developer is in the UK at the moment? I'm thinking about giving it a go rather than work for one corporation... Also, ever so slightly off topic, has anyone seen this??? [Octopus snatches coconut and runs]... I nearly fell of my chair laughing. It's mint... Cheers,

I knew what you meant, but 'mint' has since been replaced by phrases such as 'top drawer' at least the parts of North Manchester where I reside, not that I care to use such slang ;)

It's one thats stuck with me... I can't bring myself to stop saying it. Speaking of which, I've also developed the very annoying habbit of saying "Okie Doke"!!! I don't think that phrase has been cool since the 1960's!!! But yet, it still finds it's way out of my mouth at the worst times, like when holding the door for a tasty lady... I find myself cursing myself over that one quite frequently...
