Am I the only person on the planet who refuses to use these stupid "buzz" words people in office environments are comming out with??? I refer to things like:

    • "Going Forward"
    • "I have been tasked with this"
    • "The figures for Q1
    • "Has this been Actioned?

There are many many more... Are there any that get you? or make you cringe?

oooo, the Jedi's will feel this one....

There is a forum just for this (I think) - http://www.codeproject.com/feature/businessbuzzwords.aspx[^].

Like Abhinav said; take a look at the buzzword hall of shame :) Language is used to communicate information. The more simple the protocol, the less errors. A good programmer will always try to minimize the chance for errors. Them fancy words don't add value, they add confusion. I'm not even going into a discussion with somebody who wants a helicopter-view of a snakes-on-a-plain-problem.

The particular buzz phrases you mention have one commonality, the remove personal accountability. It is a common theme in the business world, when there is no one to blame there is no one to fire. For example, "Going forward we will no longer forward off-color email jokes" instead of "Tom, that email you sent is offensive. Don't do it again" "I have been tasked with flambernegating the differential" instead of "John told me to flambernegating the differential" The more BIG business you have exposure to the more likely you are to see this type of usage. It makes it really easy to spot a back-stab in progress because the non-accountable terms are transformed into accountable terms when setting someone up!

They wouldn't be using those words if they thought that it doesn't add value to what they are saying. That kind of insecurity is quite common, I'm afraid :sigh:

At a previous workplace, the CEO was abusing the word "shift" so much ("We need to embrace the shift", "We are in the middle of the shift"), that we finally started using it in contexts such as: "We are in deep shift", "Shift happens" or "shift has hit the fan".

Agreed except for the Q1 bit. This refers to a certain time period otherwise you would waste time and space (on slides) with "The first quarter" or "The first three months of..".

I agree except for Q1 which if you think it's an obfuscational business jargon buzzword you need to learn a bit more about how business actually works for sheer self defense if nothing else. :)

Also, that may mean Q1 of business year, not calendar year.

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

Let's take this discussion offline. Outside the office I've noticed a rise in the use of the word gifting as in Here are some gifting ideas for this festive season. There are probably loads more but I'm currently having a good day and I'd like to keep my blood pressure somewhere around normal

Am I the only person on the planet who refuses to use these stupid "buzz" words people in office environments are comming out with??? I refer to things like:

                                    • "Going Forward"
                                    • "I have been tasked with this"
                                    • "The figures for Q1
                                    • "Has this been Actioned?

There are many many more... Are there any that get you? or make you cringe?

"Buzz word" is a buzzword phrase. :-D I much prefer "meaningless, trite, entirely made up evasions of proper English usage to mask your inexcusable ignorance" to "buzz word."

What is wrong with Q1? First quarter is a buzzword now? What's wrong with that one?!

After years in the corporate world, I'm now bilingual. I speak English and Gibberish. Well, okay, perhaps to my friends on the other side of the pond I should say American and Gibberish. :)

At a previous workplace, the CEO was abusing the word "shift" so much ("We need to embrace the shift", "We are in the middle of the shift"), that we finally started using it in contexts such as: "We are in deep shift", "Shift happens" or "shift has hit the fan".
