I'll probably be bounced from CP for my heresy but, I just received an email "cajoling" me into uploading my Azure Contest app with the promise of a Win7 OS. I know MS is 4-5 years behind Amazon in the "Cloud" but I'm struggling to see the "hook" with going with Azure before it has been fully defined. Just my opinion.
The answer is obviously that MS provides prizes to incite people to try/use Azure, fill places like CP with sample apps, and create some sort of critical mass. Right now, I think it's stupid ( Azure, not the idea of a contest ).

Agreed. Just seems that the Kindle would have been enough. Now since I have not uploaded my app yet, I apparently need an extra inducement. I guess I'll upload my Azure app tonight with a link to my AWS app. :)

That's not correct, Don. The email seems to have been sent to everyone who downloaded a token (including folks who've already uploaded an app). I got one for instance, and I already have the app uploaded.

That's not correct, Don. The email seems to have been sent to everyone who downloaded a token (including folks who've already uploaded an app). I got one for instance, and I already have the app uploaded.

That's right but the email was also sent to people who've already uploaded. And I assume the 12/24 deadline is to add a Christmas touch to it :-) I assumed you were indicating that the mail was only sent out to people who haven't uploaded yet.

That's right but the email was also sent to people who've already uploaded. And I assume the 12/24 deadline is to add a Christmas touch to it :-) I assumed you were indicating that the mail was only sent out to people who haven't uploaded yet.

I don’t see anything wrong with it. Microsoft is trying to promote Azure and for any platform to be popular it needs to be adopted by the developers. If developers do not try it, they will never know what it is in it and how it is useful. So this way of promotion is not at all bad. It is Microsoft’s Azure and Microsoft’s Windows 7, so what is the problem if Microsoft gives away one product to promote some other product.

When was the last time you thought something was not stupid. ;P I am, however, not very thrilled by the idea of this contest. It is more of a lottery. All you need to do is to upload your app to Azure and click on the submit button once a day. John and Rutvik are the only ones who have done something sensible with it (even though they have not done anything that really justifies the need for “cloud”). The contest has been very confusing so far. What should have been done wasto require people to write some article on Azure.

Understood. But how many contests on CP have we had where in the span of two weeks we have been "induced" to participate with the promise of two prizes? I'm not saying it's wrong. It's just curious that the "cloud" is so important before anyone can define its "practical" useful application.

What about the following: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/evidence/[^] Also, does salesforce ring a bell? Cloud Computing concept is not new and there are several SaaS applications on the Cloud. In fact I will say MS is little late in the game.

What are you talking about? This thread is about M$ Azure Developer buy-in. Of course M$ is late to the game - is that a shock to you? M$ can promote their shills all day long. How about if they get off of top dead center and complete "Windows Azure Platform Training Kit" for the November SDK. That commitment to a quality product would go a long way towards developer commitment.

There are not a lot of practical applications running on the cloud. If there were do you really think MS and Amazon would be pushing their separate technologies as hard as they are?

I don’t know what you mean by lot. Google Docs runs on cloud and I use it a lot. Salesforce is on cloud and I use it too though not daily. PracticeFusion is on cloud. SAP On-Demand is on Cloud. Most of the Oracle ERP application modules are increasingly become available on the Cloud. If I start to make a list, I can probably come up with a lot of applications. Cloud Computing is going to be a very important part of the future and I have no doubt that more and more applications will be available on the cloud in the next 2-5 years. MS is promoting it because it promotes any other of its technology and it thinks that Azure is going to play a very important role in future. Amazon has been pretty successful already but it still has lot of scope and see lot of money to be made by making people use the idle capacity in its data-centers.

"lot" is your word. I'm assuming you mean many. Once again we're debating Azure vs. "the cloud". Who is running an enterprise application in the "Cloud" that has enterprise level acceptance? I know M$ is putting a portion Office 2010 online - but is that in the "cloud"? I don't know. You say Cloud Computing is to become very important in the next 2-5 years. I heard the same thing about Oracle's Net Computing 10 years ago. We'll see. I'd like to see someone come out with a sales pitch that says the cloud is the future and "this is why" So far all I've heard is "there are too many servers - too much capacity and we've invented a new technology to help you with a problem you may or may not have" What is the ROI? Do you have examples?
