Cheap Windows 7?

Finally decided to upgrade my home machine from XP 32 to Win 7 64 Ultimate. Does anyone know a good place to get it cheaply and legit in the UK? Cheapest I've seen so far is around £140 but I'm sure I've heard of it going <£100 somewhere.

Yeah actually. I might just buy it at £140 or whatever asda/walmart are charging if they sell it though. I figured I could set it up during the few days I get off at xmas.

The OEM version is cheap, you need to buy it alongside a PC part as it is "for PC Builders Only" (still legit though). Typically you can buy the OEM version (no different from the like for like non-OEM counterparts in terms of functionality) alongside somthing like an IDE cable, to prove you are a machine builder. Note that the OEM license differs from the non-OEM one. Check out DABS.com for prices.

Thanks, Dabs has the OEM one for £102. A lot less than the exact same thing on aria.co.uk where I first looked which was £143.

Be aware of the differences in licenses. OEM often comes with a license that says it is for 1 pc only. So if you upgrade or rebuild your PC in the future, you do not have the rights to install the OEM OS on the replacement PC. Retail however is more relaxed. You can install it on a PC, then if you upgrade your PC, provided you remove it from the old one you are allowed to reinstall on the new one. [None of this is fact, last time I checked details like this was when I got XP back when it first came out before things with WGA existed, I could easily be wrong, or it could have changed - What I'm saying is, check the terms suit your needs]

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. I'm always changing my hardware so sounds like I might need retail. I'll look into it in more detail before buying anything.
A coworker just bought the OEM version and actually called Microsoft. They said that as long as he doesn't change the motherboard, he'll be fine.

Yup. They keying is tied to a single component to simplify the whole issue. If your mobo dies and is replaced you can phone activate it afterwards. I assume the information you send back/forth includes misc other info on your system so that you can't game it do a complete system swap and that total activations are tallied to detect abuse and kill the key; but MS seems reticent to explain the details of their system for some odd reason. :rolleyes:
