Looks like my motherboards slowly dying :(

Been staying over at my parents for a few days and got back today. Computer was fine at first and network access was fine, but after rebooting it looks like the built-in LAN on my motherboards gone kaput. It gets itself in an repeating cycle saying cable disconnected, then reconnected, over and over but never gets as far as acquiring an IP address. So spent several hours diagnosing this. I was supposed to be upgrading from Win XP to Win 7 today. I tried installing Win 7 onto a different partition to see if it had the same problem, and it did. Problem is confined to my computer as my network camera works fine on same ethernet socket and cable. Eventually tried reducing speed down to 10 Mbps and seems to work on that, but not on 100 Mbps which used to be fine. But since I've had various other problems that are probably down to the motherboard such as the built-in sound sometimes not working until after a reboot and a hang approximately every 2 weeks I think I should probably look into getting it replaced. It's 11 months into it's 12 months warranty and I'm not relishing the prospect of having to rebuild the computer or potentially being without a motherboard for dunno how long. Anyway, just wanted to rant....

I would suggest you add an Ethernet board and disable the current Ethernet port; that may or may not fix all problems you mentioned. :)

Yeah I thought about that. I'm just worried the board may cease up completely in a few months or something, and it's nearly out of warranty.

OK, even more reason to experiment with an Ethernet card to better describe the symptoms, and then turn in the machine for repair. :)

I'd check the power supply, too. At least, check that there are no "toasted" pins.

I'd use a boot cd (Knoppix/UBCD4Win) to see if it's the hardware or maybe the drivers loaded with Windows that are causing the problem.
